Local excavation company never covers their loads(despite having the friggen tarp build into the dump truck). They're basically a walking glass repair supporter. You can be 2 lanes over(3 lane hwy here) and still catch a rock chip.

Having *just* replaced a cracked windshield drives me up the wall each time I see them rolling down the road.

That is because nobody holds them accountable - you call them on it and they call their insurance company. Their insurance company dutifully takes all your information and then tells them they are not liable so you either take it or do something about it.

I got tired of it and was driving on a freeway when i passed a gravel truck that had a stone blow off and hit the windshield. I violated my driving rules and took a couple of pics of the side of the truck which showed that it was loaded and not tarped and the driver's door which showed the company name, DOT number, and the driver. Went through the whole rigamarole and then filed a lawsuit - not in small claims court because of the rules of evidence. Filed discovery papers on them and they called and settled for full payment plus filing fees plus a small settlement sum for the hassle - a few hundred. The windshield was worth a lot less than their lawyer.

Was it worth the time - probably not - but it did feel good.
