My buddy has plates and insurance on his Polaris and legally drives it on the road. Itç—´ safer than a motor cycle IMO.
That's what peeves me off. Some other more rural WA counties they are legal if you put side view mirrors and a horn. And yeah much safer regardless than a motorcycles or tricycles IMO!

The biggest downside is the asphalt is hard in the tires. I know some people the run pickup mud tires on them.

True... but I just want to go a few miles down the road to get to the offload areas or to the local general store for milk, or just down the driveway/cross the street to get the mail or... Again, the need for towing killed the instant joy.

Massachusetts State Police

What could go wrong? ... Yesterday morning, Trooper Christopher Kaszyk of the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section was on patrol on Route 58 in Carver when he observed a Dodge RAM 5500 truck carrying a medium-sized excavator estimated to weight about 10,500 lbs. In addition to exceeding the truck's acceptable gross vehicle weight rating by 4,450 lbs., the excavator was secured with just one 3-inch strap (with an estimated securing capacity of 3,000 lbs., or less than one-third of the weight of the excavator it was holding in place). The driver was fined for those violations as well as for the weight on the rear axle exceeding the tire ratings, having an expired expiration sticker,a missing wheel fastener, and having no warning flag on the projecting load. Because of the public safety hazards posed by the truck, Trooper Kaszyk placed it out of service until the excavator could be off-loaded.

To be fair, that doesnt look half bad, minus the proper chains and the flag. The 5500 has a GVWR of 19500lbs, with a 7000+lb rating on the front axle alone, and a GCWR of 38,500lbs... Seriously, it wasnt over loaded 'by 4,450lbs'.

Unless the registration was for a lower rating, meaning he just wasnt legal, I dont see it

Wish they would start clamping down on this kind of thing up here. It's pretty rampant. Excavators, and especially skid steers for some reason. See them going down the road all the time without a single tie down, not even straps, let alone the proper chains and binders. I guess it's going to have to take a few fatalities related to unsecure loads before NDOT starts paying attention to it.
Same way here. For every skid steer you see properly secured you see five that are not.

Almost daily I see one around town with no tie downs whatsoever.
