Done that with 12' 2 x 8's before. Have to watch the turns at intersections and lots of weight on the front. I was always going to make a bed extender but never got around to it..............Mike

LOL.. I've done that before with 12' drywall in a 6' bed... ladder and all Though I did buy a 8' 7/16" OSB and used the 5gal pals of mud as counter balance.

This guy had no weight on the front of his boards, his cargo strap is loose, and it was "teeter-tottering" up and down in the back the whole way. Don't know which part was more remarkable, that and he was flying down the road with this. After catching up to him to take the pic, I backed way off, half expecting it all to come out the back on the next dip in the road.

I think the only thing keeping it in the bed was the red flag on the back.

He just needed a long strap to go from the end of the boards, over the top of the cap and then hook it too the front bumper. That could work.

When I put anything longer than 10 ft in my truck bed, I put two stakes (4-5 ft long) into the side extenders then tie a rope from the front ends of the bed to the top of the stakes then to the end of the load. The stakes become booms that hold my load up and keep them from flexing and sliding off the bed

I will admit that I have less than desirable loading/securing of loads on rare occasions, hauling outsized items in my F150. One thing for sure, is that I am not passing other people. I am going slow and minimizing G forces the whole way home. It is the 'bump in the road' (dynamic 'G's) that will bite you. Problem is so many people don't have enough sense or cents to safely secure and transport things that are not a normal part of their routine. Scary really... and they have no comprehension of the risk they are putting on others in their path.

A couple of years ago, when we traded in our long-bed truck for a short-bed model, I got a bed extender. Mostly we use it to support the canoe or kayaks when we make a boating outing, but it works well for long building materials, too.

What's even worse is when you have everything balanced like that and the tailgate straps decide to let go...since the entire weight is balanced on the outside edge of the tailgate.

He should have gone missed. That's a great example of why it's a very bad idea to cut off something that outweighs you by several ton and can't match your stopping power to make your turn.

I had to haul some 12' railroad ties once, I put them on top of my Datsun bed trailer, elevated the front end of them with a 4x4 so they would clear the tow pickup and used two 2" straps on them. Plenty of clearance, no dangerous overhang on the back.

I hauled my house stairs home from the factory in the back of an 8' bed, probably close to 16' long.
