Share Pics of People Hauling or Towing Something Wrong

Unrelated to towing or hauling, but related to the rust.
This truck was used as a personal plow truck until it wouldn't go anymore. It got towed into my shop to pull the plow frame to put on a better truck. I tried to pick it up, and as the rear wheels came off the ground, I heard rust and crinkly metal, so I stopped lifting. View attachment 497320

From your previous post it's not Toyotas fault. It's the fault of your son and the previous owner.

They should have had it inspected in the alloted time and your son should have done his homework prior to buying.

I am no Toyota fan. I owned one in the early 90's and it was good. I would buy another but have since bought 24 other vehicles since all by other manufacturers becauseToyota just didn't have what I liked.

As a father of two I would not let my children in a death trap. If it needs to be parked do so and keep your kids safe. It's not worth risking a life over a few bucks!

Yep, extreme case of caveat emptor for sure. There is, rightfully so, some expectation that a vehicle frame would not literally break in half in 10 years. Besides, how many people who purchase a used late model vehicle from a dealer actually crawl under it and inspect the frame. Seriously.

He has a payment on it and surely cannot afford to park it to take on another.

My beef is that Toyota admits the frames are faulty but using a technicality to escape. I've read cases at both ends of the spectrum too. Like the guy with a beat up, left for dead pickup being paid a settlement value much greater than the truck's actual value.

I did not post my sons predicament to start an argument or debate but wanted everyone to know there's two sides to the story.

Live and learn. I always take any used vehicle to a independent shop hand have it checked out. Usually $75 with a oil change and rotation. During this process I'm in the shop looking it over from the lift.


If I don't buy it the owner gets a free oil change and rotation.

That's a very good idea and one that my son will see value in now.

Same here. Except I pay $110 but I only pay for the first one. If he rejects it, I don't pay for the 2nd or 3rd. He might make me pay at the 4th, I don't know, I never reached that number. No oil change or rotation but well worth it.

I also climb under it looking for problems that I can spot. Buyer beware and NEVER take it to a mechanic the seller recommends.

If you are really interested in the vehicle and if the value/price justifies it you should consider taking a sample of the oil drained out and getting an analysis.

Since you're draining oil anyway.

What do you mean, the 2ed, 3ed or 4th what?

I think he means the mechanic will check over up to 3 potential purchase vehicles for a single $110.

So looking at the pics it appears the truckailer must be front wheel drive only.

There doesn't seem to be a driveshaft visible between the tire and fender but there looks to be something visible between the rear tires, I think. It doesn't make sense that someone would go through all that effort to do that build and then only rely on FWD only for traction. Plus, the rear wheels look spaced different and wider than you would expect on that trailer so maybe there is a rear end in there? It doesn't seem logical to build only on FWD.
