I don't mind hanging over the rear of my bed, gate up or down, during the day, and well secured and flagged. I don't like wide side loads though..

for secured loads, I would agree, but that wasn't secured enough to say so.
For long loads (where I know about them in advance), I like to grab a pair of the $9.99 Harbor Freight magnetic lights and put them in the back (tied or taped on for a non-magnetic load). Gives the person behind me one less reason to rear end me and make a mess out of my day.
