I know it's wrong, but I couldn't help but laugh about that.

I'm not sure about it being "wrong" to haul a horse in the back of a pickup.
If it's wrong, then we were wrong a bunch. When I was a kid, (long time ago) we didn't have stock trailers and we hauled animals in the back of the truck often.
30 years ago, the game wardens in Wyoming all carried a horse in their pickup. May still do that.

I've seen lots of livestock and horses hauled in pickups, but can't remember seeing any that didn't have cab height or higher sides and ends added.

I just remembered something. I was 13 at the time "26 now" anyway I went a yard sale out in a rural part of Arkansas about a mile from home.

I rode my bicycle out there about a mile. At the yard sale there was a Tow behind spreader like the one in the link EarthWay Tow Spreader — 80-Lb. Capacity, Model# 2050T | Lawn Spreaders| Northern Tool + Equipment

The guy wanted $5.00 for it. So I bought it even though I really had no use for it at the time. The guy said I could come back later and get it with a vehicle if I needed too.

I said no I have a hitch on my bicycle and I'll just tow it home. lol I had an old atv hitch mounted to the bicycle. I used to pull a little lawn/garden trailer around with the bicycle picking up cans.

So he hitched up the spreader to my bicycle hitch and I pulled it down the road the 1 mile back home. People were giving me weird looks all the way home and even offered to give me a ride back home so I wouldn't have to pull the down the road. I told them no thanks I'll make it home and I did.

I still have the spreader today and I never once used it. I think I bought it just so I could have something else to tow behind my bicycle. I always loved towing things.

When I was growing up lots of folks around had cattle racks for their trucks including us. Some were made from pipe and some were wooden. Ours were wooden similar to these: http://bioengr.ag.utk.edu/extension/extpubs/Plans/6192.pdf

Later on we got a livestock trailer and the racks were scrapped.
