The real irony of the video;
"Car expert Lauren Fix told Inside Edition that many people just don稚 know how to properly hitch a trailer. She showed how the pin should be used correctly.

典his little 25 cent part goes through this hole, she said, while showing the Inside Edition cameras how it works. 典his is the protection that keeps this latch from popping up when you hit a bump."

Yet if you look at the hitch while she is demonstrating, at about 1:20 you can see that it isn't even settled onto the trailer ball.
Ya I noticed that also. It always amazes me how little TV experts actually know.

On a side note friend got pulled over in pick up and gooseneck and was a little overweight on truck and didn't have CDL just the overweight ticket cost over $2,000 plus no inspection stickers no log books no safety chains. And had to have vehicle towed, but this is Illinois.

I wouldn't trust an R clip installed that way either. It should at least be a coupler pin with an R clip on the end. Personally, the only thing I use is the locking style coupler pin and ball mount pin. They are way more secure and also serves as a theft deterrent. They are quite a few quarters more but considering the safety concerns and money invested in the trailer and it's contents it should be a no brainer.
You could be cheap like me and use a bolt with a lock nut, and two wrenches. Just don't keep reusing the locknut.

poerstroke444e...--he had no tie down chains on the load? It was just sitting on the trailer?

And no trailer brakes. With that weight it would be illegal out here :whistleblower:

I know that I was illegal. What amazed me was there was a CHP creeping up in the number 1 lane, and he just drove right by me and kept his speed in that lane......Maybe he didn't care to look because I was going 60 mph when everyone else was pushin 85...?

Does that rear right trailer light actually still work?
That broken one, yes it actually does work! the other side that isn't all busted, does not work!

Got to admire your commitment to the subject of the post mopar :)
Thanks. :)

I'm surprised that burban fit between the fenders. Did yall measure it or just try your luck?
I just took a wild guess! I did not measure! LOL

Mopar318, the shame of this haul was that you KNEW all of the things wrong with it. And yet, you allowed the totally unsafe situation to play out. I hate to be critical, but you deserve to be chastised. Please - PLEASE don't ever do that again. Dispose of that trailer, save a life; maybe even yours - or mine!

I know, and I am sorry. I will not do this again with this trailer.

Ha...I’m ok with pushing the weight/size limits...non functioning safety stuff will get you put out of service though...
I would definitely be put out of service had that officer I mentioned pulled me over.

You risked fines and everyone on the roads life to save a buddy a $100 towing bill? Long ago I gave up helping people save $50-$100 towing bill as no good deed goes unpunished.

I was out of line. I always strive to be that one friend who can be counted on no matter what and get stuff done. One day I just might need to be rescued.

Well Mopar, you were man enough to admit your wrong doing. Now fix the trailer before reuse. :)

BTW, did you harass your friend with the old my Dodge is dragging your crappy Chevy home speech? :D

I was thinking about this thread on the weekend...no pics, but years ago, I hauled all my household stuff in a rented truck from Seattle, WA to Columbus, OH. All my stuff was packed in, around and over a Honda Civic, which was just parked in the truck with no straps or anchoring of any kind. In retrospect, maybe not good practice.

Depends on how well you had all that stuff wedged in.

Log books?

It was packed pretty tight. I also constructed a loft over the car to hold even more stuff. I found out that a mattress, if given enough time rubbing, will sand the paint right off a car fender.

I want to add that in those videos the real culprit in over half of the cases was too light weight on the tongue with too much weight behind the axle. that is what gets them swaying like the first situation.

Yup!
Most folks will tell you that they can just guess the proper tongue weight (when it looks right).
Not likely!
Tongue weight can be measured with a simple bathroom scale.
If the bathroom scale is suitable for up to 400 lbs. it can be used to measure several times that for tongue weight.
Google: "How to measure trailer tongue weight with bathroom scale".
