I don't think it is just unsafe but it is the law that you need to have your load strapped down. Police will do something about it because they are trying to protect innocent people and that is a very likely scenario in the case of an unsecured load.

Or the truck broke down....

Back in the 40s thru the 70s a lot of farmers didn't have a pickup, for dairy farms that didn't raise bull calves it was quite common to put the calve in a burlap bag leaving just it's head out and tieing the sack shut, put the sack in the trunk and have the wife take it to the sale barn. Even today how are you going to keep a calf controlled if you don't either hobble or bag them, loose in a trailer? talk about banging them up.

Snitches get stitches.

With that emoji, I'm assuming you meant that as a joke.

May 11, 2004. I remember the date but not the accident. I woke up in the hospital to a crying wife. Later I got a visit from a LEO who couldn't believe I was alive. I am now somewhat dyslexic from that "accident". That "accident" was caused by somebody not tieing down their load and losing landscape timbers. Anybody who wants to call me a snitch for expressing concern about the safety of a load better be ready to be severely reprimanded, fact shamed, belittled, etc. :)

Saw this yesterday going 60 mph. Bungee cords can hold any thing, right.View attachment 538599
Yep. I happened to have the CB on while heading down the highway, and heard one trucker telling another about his recent experience. While passing a car which had a brand new Old Town canoe strapped down with bungie cords, the wind blew the canoe off, which went bouncing down the highway. SP were called, the officer arrived and wrote a report out. Meanwhile the canoe owner wouldn't stop whining about his new toy, trying to get the trucker to pay for it. The trooper eventually grew weary of the whining and wrote him up for an insecure load.

If cargo is not prevented from forward movement (for example, by the headboard, bulkhead, other cargo, or tiedown attached to the cargo), secure the cargo according to the following requirements:
