Yea, tops are secure. Still too easy to drive off edge or to have something else fail. Personally, I'd winch it down.

Tend to agree on this with the setup as is.

I would suggest a connector bar at the base of the ramps and then have 3" lips on either side of each ramp. The lips could be slightly offset to still allow for easy folding, then you could just drive up, or gently roll down with very little worry of those tires slipping off. Might even mitigate the need for the winch on loading if one was feeling froggy that day...

My college engineering professors promised us students that we needed to know both systems because metric was coming to the US (that was early 80s).

I have (had) two tractors with ISO fasteners: M8 nuts with wrench size 14, where DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) is 13mm. M10 is 16mm, M12 is 18mm. (in DIN these are 17 and 19mm respectively)
These were a Ferguson 35 with the Standard 23C engine, and my Zetor 3011 of 1967 (even though it is model 1958)

This was because both America and Europe were going to standardise to ISO.... But America pulled in the turd... So Europe went back to DIN standard as it still is today...

So, America will slowly convert to DIN because fasteners are cheaper on the world markets, and because so many products are already engineered in Europe: Navistar engines by MAN, Paccar engines by DAF, John Deere builds for the world market so its metric, and so does CNH. All Japanese brands of USA built cars are metric... It wont be long till the only things Imperial are fasteners used in construction...

The reason that American belt trailers are converted to European SAF or BPW axles, is because no trucking company wants American axles, with imperial dimensions... So yes, we'll buy anything off your hands, as long as its metric...

Wow! Close call for the camera car. What caused that to happen? (re the flipped semitrailer)
I found that online. Someone commented Tappan Zee bridge (NY?) spring 2016, and a date shows in the dashcam border. That's all I know.

Oh and another comment noted that the median barrier is flexible, it is moved daily to favor traffic commuting in/out, and the barrier got shoved over into the oncoming lane. So likely some excited people over there.

Looks to me that the rear axle simply fell off as the driver braked and entered the curve.

The camera driver was lucky. Seems to me an axle that broke free on only one side (in the beginning) would swerve the trailer into the next lane.

Added: I did a little searching and here's another discussion of the incident.

Only have to add at least one market that isn't affected...

Antique, Classic and Muscle cars of America are heading overseas like never before... several I know are making a good living sending cars to Europe and New Zealand...

They seem to have a brace or support at the front bumper. Loading and stacking high. Did not see them leave so as to see how it was tied down. Car was starting to squat a bit........

Will have to disagree here. My educated guess is the last market for Imperial fasteners will be in the aviation industry. Already seeing metric in the US Industrial sector.

Commercial aircraft design in Europe, Japan, China, and Australia is Imperial. These current designs will be in production for a decade or two.

Spend years lovingly restoring your convertible classic car. Then trailer it, top down, on I-80 over Donner Summit inbound to the "Hot August Nights" event in Reno.

Then the thundershower arrives .....
