I hope they have a radio link so the truck driver can tell the excavator when to stop pushing!

Nah, radios are for wimps. Two quick blasts on the air horn means to start pushing, three quick blasts on the air horn means to stop pushing. That's standard "lingo" for push starting a big rig lol.

Carrying a lot of gas in any type of container on a motor vehicle is always a tad risky. What safer way can you think of to transport gas? I presume this guy doesn't carry it around every day and has some need (? stocking summer cabin, ? gas for boat, ? gas for generator) so he has to move 30 gallons of gas somehow.

I'd certainly rather have the gas outside the vehicle for any number of reasons. Roof rack might be a tad safer but hitch mounted rack is more practical. Big red containers are a pretty decent safety alert to following drivers to keep their distance too. And, if a fire does break out at least the fuel is outside the vehicle. I'd do it the same way.

Given the picture of the vehicle on the freeway, the general assumption in this thread is that the driver is transporting full gas cans some distance, not locally. So I maintain that the best way to transport cans long distance is to transport them empty and fill up locally.

BTW, the picture seems to have been taken while driving which is probably as dangerous, if not more.

About 15 years ago a couple guys I know ran out of gas on their way home , they were out playing with one of those air boats . They didnt have a way to move gas from the boat to the van . So one guy hopped on the boat , strapped it down harder on the trailer . fired up the air boat and with the other guy driving the van , blew themselves to the gas station about 5 miles up the road .

:D. We'd need to start a thread for "PUSHING Something Wrong" for that one!

So, what's a safer way to transport half a dozen 5 gallon cans of gasoline??? Inside the vehicle???

I guess I'd suggest that he could transport them empty and fill up wherever he is traveling to. That would be safer

If he is on a trip and simply buying gas where it is lower priced, he is jeopardizing the traveling public to save a few bucks.

That's not always possible. A few years ago they had a major tornado outbreak around Huntsville, Al. Some friends of mine were without power for several days. They borrowed a generator but could not get any gas for miles around, so we took them about six cans of gasoline. We had a truck, so that was what we used, but if it had been an SUV we would have done the same thing as that picture.

Yeah, what's worse, carrying half a dozen cans of gas on the rear of your vehicle, or taking a picture of someone doing that while you are driving.

I don't know about you guys but I don't see any chains on that excavator. This could get real exciting!

I have a 300 gallon diesel tank, for tractors but, choose to not try to store any volume of the ethanol contaminated gasoline we are mandated to use. So I have a 12 mile, one way, trip to buy gasoline in nearest town to our ranch. I have to go down Interstate 10 (a freeway) for about 2/3 of the trip. So, guess I'm filling up locally. Could be what the guy in picture was doing? A lot of "assumptions" being made from a picture?
