A friend just sheared some of the hydraulics off the boom of his hoe on a concrete bridge. Talk about lucky, although still expensive.

My Lady friend once brought me a pile of lifetime warranty tools some poor guy lost on the road. She would have brought more, except she had competition on the roadside.

For strap tails I have switched to Harbor Freight electrical tape, for $5 for 10 rolls it's the cheapest and easiest way to secure the ends I've found... it's harder to "shear" than duct tape and easier to keep in a door panel pocket of a vehicle... not great for it's intended purpose (although I've had some luck with it in certain situations) but is great for this application :)

Yeah, I try and spray them with a light lube like Crown. How nice would a butterfly, thumb turn be though?

My other peeve is that the straps are ALWAYS too long! So I roll up the ends and tie them with a wire tie. I'm paranoid about having the ends blowing in the wind or getting under a wheel!

I have some dedicate towing straps and just cut them to the right length and burn the edges closed. Th extra length that's left is no problem and hooking up is so much easier. I even cut my chains to the right length and is save lots of time and frustration. I have some full length straps and chains for certain loads but they don't get used much.

Same here, I cut my straps the first time I use them, and I have chains with 6" hooks on one end and register 5/16" chain hooks on the other that are 6 feet long, those go right onto truck and car rear axle housings. I have a 22 foot long trailer, I don't need 25' long straps at each corner of a piece of equipment.

I have some HD tow straps that I removed the 70G chain section and put new grab hooks right to the D ring. There was rarely enough room to work with that extra piece of chain. Always wondered if an inspector would notice that I put on my own (not 70g) grab hooks.

The end result of leaving a boom up on a lowbed. From about twelve years ago the owner didn't have his own lowbed so hired it out and the truck driver was suppose to know how load an excavator. He hit an overpass bridge over the TransCanada highway on the east side of Winnipeg.

I see a bent boom and some cowling, but that should be replaceable. Why does it appear to be in a scrap yard?

Both booms are bent, all the cylinders are bent, there’s a track missing, and who knows what else is damaged. It would probably cost more to fix that than it’s worth.

It was completely written off as it was completely destroyed it went through one bridge girder and seriously mangled another. The boom wasn't just bent it was broken, the stick was mangled, track chains broken and a bunch of other structural elements were broken my friend was telling me.

The liability to repair and use it on a jobsite would never be worth it.

Anyone would be foolish to repair it and offer any kind of warranty.
