This is an easy and safe way to carry a log chain with you at all times. I built this one for a 7308 F.E.L. but it would work on any F.E.L. that has a hollow front brace.

Good idea, my crosstube is round and usually has shovel slid inside but i could see 3in PVC pipe used instead if it fits.

Inventive use of available enclosed space. Thanks for posting this.

thats the neatest idea i have seen ever for carrying a chain, unfourtanatly none of our loaders have the ends of the torque tube open, but i will definatly keep that in mind, infact i may make a tube bumper for my mule just so i can make a tray like that for chain

I think a 3" square tube or larger, strapped to your round tube brace would hold a good sized chain. The drawer in mine is 2 3/4' x 5" I like the round PVC idea. You could use a cross brace on one end to keep it from turning and to hold it in place.

I'm guilty so let me apologize right up front I brought this thread back to life because its a great idea now I'm trying to make it work for my M9000 which has an open 5-1/2" round tube that is 43-1/2" long. My thought since I still don't weld is I was going to buy a 5-1/2 x 43-1/2 piece of pvc and put screw on end caps on it that would hold it in place and keep everything in the tube sounds good until you go to by 5" pvc either they don't make it or I haven't found it yet plus the fittings. So I'm back to square 1 has anyone else done something like this on their loader tube on a large tractor I've about decided to forgo the pipe idea all together and just get 2 round flat pieces to cover the ends and have them removable to get the chain in and out. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Why not use 4" pipe? You could glue a cap on one end and use a female adapter and a plug on the other?

Steven,

I suspect the reason Jan made a drawer is that his opening is too small to push a chain directly in. But with your 5.5 ID , couldn't you just eliminate the drawer and figure out a way to cap the ends?

That's a NEAT idea. I too have a round tube, but I suppose a guy could use a PVC as mentioned previously. The top load is a neat idea.

A guy could leave it full round at each end for a bit and scoop out the top using a chunk of the top screwed in place as a drawer stop....

Need to keep it breathable/well drained in case it is put away wet.

KennedyDiesel good point there are many times when the chain could be damp what a mess that would be when you opened it up a week or so later one big pile of rust. I'm going on the hunt tommorrow for a way to use that tube because as I'm sure many people will laugh this 30' of 1/2" chain I opt'd for is heavy and the only place I've found to put it is in the bucket if it were mounted but most the time I have the grapple on and then I have to wrap it around it to carry or ride with it under my feet.

I went with the tray idea because chain doesn't push well /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I pull the drawer almost all the way out and just lay the chain in
back and forth until it is all in, takes about 4 seconds. shut the drawer and lock and your on your way.
I don't know of any PVC with a 5 inch dia. outside of ordering it from a plastic co. They have about any size your willing to pay for, but you could cut out a slot in some 5" thin wall tubing and make it work. good luck!
