I'll start by laying out what I'm looking for: 25-35hp, 4x4, Hydro Trans, FEL, Backhoe, R4 tires, if used, below 500hrs and maybe a front remote cuz I'd like to get a grapple. I plan on using it to clear some acreage, dig stumps and move logs around. The brands I'm favoring are Kioti, LS, Kubota, Mahindra, Branson and maybe New Holland. I'll consider any other brand depending on the situation... then there is price. This is where I seem to be disconnected. I've looked at used and new and they are both really close in price. I've seem some used tractors priced more than a new of the same model. I know location has something to do with it but can there really be that much of a difference? As a reference I'm located in North Carolina and for being somewhat of an Ag state there doesn't seem to be very many tractor dealers. So after all that, how much should I expect to pay for a package like this? All so, does the build seem to fit the task? I appreciate all the feedback. Hopefully it will make the decision a little easier and quicker.

Thanks.

You think you are offering us a few variables, in turn for a price recommendation. In fact you have offered so many variables no one can give you a useful answer.

You have not specified how much land you will work, nor whether it is flat or sloped. You have not specified your tractor storage.

The optimal way to shop for tractors is to list your tasks first, then determine bare tractor weight you need to SAFELY accomplish your tasks. Bare tractor weight is a tractor specification easily found in sales brochures and web sites, readily comparable across tractor brands and tractor models.

For most tractor tasks greater chassis weight is more important than tractor horsepower. This tractor fundamental is difficult for people new to tractors to comprehend. In subcompact and compact tractor categories it requires a 50% increase in bare tractor weight before you notice a significant tractor capability increase. It takes a 100% increase in bare tractor weight to elicit MY-OH-MY!

Heavier tractors are built on larger frames with larger wheels/tires. Heavier tractors with large diameter tires have more tractive power pulling ground contact implements, pushing a loader bucket into dirt and pushing snow. Larger wheels and tires mean more ground clearance, enabling a heavier tractor to bridge holes, ruts and downed tree limbs with less bucking, yielding a less disturbing passage over rough pastures and woodlands.

Safe hillside operation demands more tractor weight than flat land operation and requires four wheel drive (4-WD). Greater mass of heavy-chassis tractors increases tractor stability when transporting loads in the FEL bucket, the most rollover prone of routine tractor tasks. Heavier tractors have adjustable rear wheel spreads; wide rear wheel spreads reduce tractor lateral instability.

Shop your weight range within tractor brands. Budget will eliminate some choices. Collect a dealer brochure for each tractor model in your weight range. I spreadsheet tractor and implement specs, often a revealing exercise. I have a column for cost per pound.

Tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are offered in one configuration. Most, such as the high volume kubota standard L series, are sparely equipped to hit competitive price points. Others, such as the Yanmar YT235 and Kubota B2650/B3350 series, include enhanced productivity and comfort components.

Every tractor brand includes a model in the 2,600 pound to 2,900 pound (bare tractor) range with 100 cubic inch/24 horsepower engine. Tractors under 25-horsepower are exempt from the stringent, Tier IV emission controls which abruptly increase a tractor's cost about $3,000 above the 25-horsepower demarcation.

Most tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight operate in residential applications on one to five fairly flat acres. These "residential tractors" fit in a typical garage.

Tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are generally offered in a utilitarian configuration and a deluxe configuration, on a common chassis. Deluxe kit enhances productivity and operating comfort ~~~ but you have to pay. Many tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are too tall to fit in a typical garage, even with ROPS folded.

Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling light implements in order to buy heavier, wider, implements for a heavier tractor you eat more depreciation on the implements than on the tractor. Passing time with multiple implement browsers is a pain. ((Ask me how I know.))

For most new to tractors a quality dealer, reasonably close, available for coaching, is important. Almost every new tractor is delivered with a minor glitch or two that requires correction. My Kubota dealer is six miles away. I feel my local dealer continues to add value to my equipment. Dealer proximity is less important to others, well experienced with tractors, who perform their own maintenance.

After shopping for over a year, I became convinced that the only way to find a good, clean used tractor in my area was to camp in the dealer's parking lot and catch someone coming in to trade up, then beat the trade-in value and have cash in hand. It made no sense to me to spend 80-90% of new for a 4-5 year old machine. I shopped new and got as good a price as used.

OTOH, I got the last of the non-DPF machines, which mattered to me. YMMV

In many ag states, including my state of Florida, ag and forestry equipment, including tractors, are Florida sales tax exempt.

Inquire.

The universe of 25-horsepower tractors begins at 1,700 pounds, bare tractor.

Most 35-horsepower tractors will weight around 3,500 pounds, the heaviest, 5,000 pounds, bare tractor.

It is not in NC unless farm exemption.

I'm in Winston-Salem. There are tons of dealers in this area (including yours) just have to get out of the city a little bit in just about any direction. You are also close enough to a lot of SC dealers (tax).

You either have to be a hawk on clist checking farm & garden and heavy equipment sections a few times per day, or know of someone selling a machine if you want a good bargain on a used machine. Reality is around here, if it has been on clist more than a few days, it's a scam, overpriced, or crazy high hrs. I got real discouraged looking for used machines, but just took persistence along with cash in hand. You have to be ready to pull the trigger that day when you see a deal - otherwise good condition, low hrs, still under factory warranty in our area is going to get snatched up real quick.

When I went to look at my machine it hadn't been on clist for more than a few hrs. After talking with seller went to see it after work that day. By that time, maybe 4 hrs, he already had 4 other people with "if that guy doesn't buy it, I will" type offers from people who talked to him later that day.

For a JD or Kubota, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy a used machine unless you're looking at 10+ yrs old, 2000+ hrs in this size. Otherwise they're priced 90% of same thing new. You do save sales tax and maybe get an implement thrown in, but for the risk of a used machine the cost break just wasn't there for me.

A bit of a drive, but if a new Kubota with implements is what you're after check with Steen Enterprises in SC. They won't collect tax since out of state and prices are reasonable for package deals. For used, if you check with Michelle at Sink Farm Equipment in Lexington (Kubota dealer), she handles all their consignment sales and non-Kubota trade in sales. They typically have a decent selection and new choices every week or two.

No backhoe, no front remote, but will give you a good deal on my 25HP LS since I'm getting ready to trade it in for something larger :)
