I happened to be looking for something else when I came across this discussion, which is quite interesting. It's from the Land Tamer web site. The Land Tamer is a grown up version of Power Trac's Hunt Vee amphibious vehicle.

That is pretty cool. I like how you put a 3pt hitch and PTO for it. Not to mention a Heated and A/C Cab also. I really love versatlie machines (like Power-Trac!).

I have an interesting story about one a amphibious vehical. Years ago (1980s I think) my uncle was testing one out called a ATTEX. It had a Single cyclinder 2 cycle 18hp engine. So he's drving down a path in the woods and the coil bracket just shattered and the coil was just hanging down under the machine (engine was dead of course!)

Nice find and good explanation. That explains why skid steers only have one motor on each side and seem more powerful than an articulated machine with wheel motors on each corner. It is a design trade off. Different purpose machines.

I wonder why they put case drains on some PT units and not on other units.

I think case drains are installed on the commercial/red machines but not on the homeowner/green machines.

Case drains add cost and that may be part of the explanation.

The basic reason for case drains may be related to limiting the potential for overpressure in the hydraulic motor. This article discusses it:
