Or is the model year stamped some place else?

Any John Deere dealer can tell you the build date.

most of the serial number platse that have a bar code on them also have a build date on them too

I downloaded a free App called "John Deere Assist". It has a barcode scanner for a smart phone. Or you can manually type in Serial number. It returns the build date, emissions certificate, carburetor certificate, option codes, model number and a link to online parts catalog. Really cool App with all kinds of info. Search your App (App) and load it and the scan your barcode
