sempron vs turion vs athlon

Anyone got the skinny?

I'm looking at 3 laptops.. One can have a 2ghz sempron, or a 1.8 ghz turion.. Is the turion better? (beefier) even if slower?

The other two have sempron / athlon options..

How does the turion compair to the athlon? The way it 'appears' is the turion is a step up from the sempron, and the athlon is another step up.. or is it the other way.. turion is better than an athlon... etc..

The Turion is very similar to the athlon. It's main feature is that it works in the newer thin notebooks. Here is a link to a comparison of the 3 models. Click Here
My next notebook will be a 14" wide-screen thin. I'm tired of hauling the 15.4" wide-screen around that I have now. It's a Athlon 64 3000+ plenty fast for what I do.
The Sempron is similar to a Intel Celeron.

Ok.. so far as I can tell.. the athlon and turion are more or less 'equal' when it comes to 'power'.. but just that the turion is 'new' and was designed to be mobile.. thinner.. etc..

Now.. as to speed. I'm guessing , again, that a 1.8ghz turion is 'beefier' than a faster, but less' beefy' 2ghz sempron. In other words, the slower 'better' process would crank out more work than the slightly faster, less advanced processor.. Am I on the right track here?

It may have been a fluke, but last year my wife bought an Averatec. It quit as in died the first week. She took it back and got another one just like it. Really just like it. That one also died with in a week. Took it back and got a HP. The HP has been just fine for over a year

On edit: I typed the wrong brand to start with in this post sorry. Got chip brand mixed up with brand of computer.

I got an Averatec with AMD 64 Athlon. The notebook is nearly a year old and has worked flawless. I have carried it all over including using it with GPS on the road. It is not an equal to an HP or Sony etc but it has done very well. I don't think the graphics card is as nice as I would like and a few other things but it also has some neat features including the movie with out booting the OS. I will probably go HP next time or maybe Toshiba but this unit still works and looks new. J

It's been a few years since I dealt with this but the speed that is usually quoted is the clock speed. All processors are not created equal. The AMD chips and the Intel chips work entirely different. The Intel usually takes more clock cycles to complete an instruction than the AMD does. That is why on certain chips the AMD with a slower clock speed will perform as well as a higher clock speed Intel.

In addition, chips with internal cache will have much better performance than chips with external cache, but the cost you pay is in heat generated. That is why most laptop processor chips have external cache.

Sound, The sempron is "basically" the same as the athlon but with less(usually half) cache memory for any given speed ,therefore causing more often retreival from the HD&Ram. The next issue I would look at is power consumption, I'm not familiar with the new "turion" It could be that it has a lower consumption rate than either sempron or athlon hence might be more attractive for use away from A/C power... the 64bit has twice the calculations per clock cycle than a 32 bit processor but can only be taken full advantage of with 64 bit programs.

Now with the processor rating between Intel & AMD as Mad eluded . Amd has classified their processors in the same range as Intel's only as a reference but you'll notice they always put a + on the end of the rating because they will run most all disciplines faster than Intels except for something like video editing perhaps...encoding /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I bought an Averatec 1-1-2005 for our daughter to use in college. It was priced right (less than $900 after rebates) at CompUSA and she has had no problems whatsoever. Her dormmates have various brands of laptop computers that have some sort of problems including the high end brands. She loves the DVD player capability and brings it along when we travel so our kids can watch movies!

The best advice I received regarding laptops was from our computer tech. He sold a doctor's daughter a new top of the line laptop for $4,500. The father requested this computer. Two weeks into school the daughter's sorority hosted a party at which the daughter used the laptop to provide music. A beverage was spilled on the keyboard area which fried the motherboard. It cost $2,500 to replace the parts. Two weeks and $7,000 for a laptop. Oh well, it's only money.....
