Tractor
Kubota MX 4800
I sold my JD5105 yesterday, and I didn't really mean to do it!
For a couple of years I have considered trading up to a 4wd, probably
a M series Kubota. I talked with a dealer last fall and got a quote. He
told me I would do better to sell my tractor rather than trading it on a
new one. He worked up what he thought would be a good asking price.
I soon let the idea of a new one slide, and kept using my 5105.

A couple of weeks ago, I got the bug again. Then, on a spur of the moment
whim, I decided to advertise it on Craigslist and a local Facebook equipment
page. I snapped a few cellphone pictures and perused a couple of the used
tractor auction sites. I decided to add a thousand dollars to what the salesman
had suggested just to see what response I would get. That was Wednesday late.
I figured I would at least learn whether my asking price was in the ballpark.
I thought I might get a few offers 10% or so under my asking price.

By Thursday night, an old friend and schoolmate had made arrangements to
look at the tractor. I had to work at my part time job Thursday and Friday, so,
feeling I could trust him, I told him to come on and look at it, crank it and drive
it, etc., even though neither me nor my wife would be there.

He messaged me that he liked it, and would like to "get together" on Saturday
morning. I still figured he would probably discount my asking price by 10% or
so, and I could gracefully decline. Naw Suh! He wrote me a check for my asking
price, and said he knew I wouldn't take less.

I guess I learned a lesson: if you don't really, really want to sell, don't offer it
for sale.

Now, I have to buy a new tractor!

Learn to marry your important stuff. A divorce can be painful and expensive. Then you have to put up with eFarmHarmony.com to find a replacement. Looking on Craigslist can get you screwed so can be a waste of time and money (she uses oil, had too much cosmetic surgery, rode hard and put away wet, etc.). You also have to explain to the kids that your stuff won't be inherited and you're spending their future life of Riley on a new life partner for you.

It will be OK - they still make tractors - everyday

I almost sold my tractor two years ago. I had the bug just like you. I had a friend from work come by and look at it. He really liked it and was thinking hard about buying it. After he left I immediately went over to my neighbors house to get advice and some sense knocked into me. He is an old school farmer with lots of knowledge and experience. He told me that my tractor was paid for, in good shape, and had low hours for the year. He did not tell me not to sell it but it made me think really hard about it. I went back home, washed my tractor and sat there and looked at it. It looked better to me than it ever had before. I couldn't sell it. My wife just laughed at me, how attached I am to that tractor. I could not part with it. I did not want to see someone else with my tractor. I know, it is silly. So now I just have to convince my wife why I need to get another tractor to go along with this one. Like SJay said, they are still making tractors and you will be getting 4-wheel drive. I feel your pain. Whatever you do keep the bird dog!

Yes, you do now need a new tractor. With everything you ever wanted on it.

And some things you don't... like Tier 4.

At least you know that TBN will be here to help spend your money. Have fun.

I don't understand why you would do such a thing if you didn't really want to sell it, other than acting on an impulse, which is never the thing to do. You got what you wanted for it, be happy with that. :)

I personally don't like selling to friends. Even though I may not have had a problem with what I was selling. Knowing Murphy's Law, it would brake down right after I sold it and may lose that friend over it.

I have been where you are a few times over the years....enough to have learned my lesson even though the urge still strikes. I am not a collector of junk or memorabilia. If it's on my place it has a use and gets used. So in years past that determined what stayed and what didn't. But I have decided to never sell anything again and since making that decision have prided myself on staying the course as several things I was going to sell found an unknown use and are here to be used.
