Hi All-

I just acquired a 57-ish 861 with bad power steering. I'm getting ready to dig into the problem. Before starting, I figured I should check in here to find out if there are any "usual suspects" known to experienced owners that I should look for right away.

So far, all I've done is to replace the filter on the pump & note that there is fluid coming out of the pump. (Don't know what the pressure is- just that it's flowing.)

I don't know if there's more than one type of PS system, but what I have involves a hydraulic cylinder going to the front wheel on each side. They appear to be double-acting. I'd guess that turning the steering wheel bumps a valve off-center that stays open until the action of the cylinders re-centers the valve.

Neither cylinder is moving, so my problem is at a level that would affect both. (I'm getting no assist at all.)

There must be a return path to the pump that is normally open. Could that be stuck in the open position? Any pressure relief valves that might be prone to sticking?

If y'all don't have any likely trouble spots to suggest, I guess I'll just look for that centering valve, and work outward from there.

Any thoughts?

Regards,
-Nick

pump has a relief, and the steering column has a valve block.
