seeding a new lot -- topsoil / straw questions --

i have a new lot, and last year i moved a lot of clay to get the elevation up --

-- well, this year it's time for seeding, but i have no topsoil -- so i'll be buying some.

the lot is 150x900 -- 3 acres -- and the only spot that really needs topsoil is behind the house -- like 150x200 --

-- how much soil am i looking at here?

also, i will blow-mulch the whole lot, using about 120 bales of straw - is $3/bale a good price?

how deep do you want to go?
volume measurements require 3 measurements.

Personally, I'd make some
get a bunch of compost and till it in to your soil and make topsoil out of it.

Can't help you with the topsoil but oat straw is selling for $1.10-1.50 a square bale when you purchase a 100 plus bales around here. That is in Canadian dollars BTW.

Some quick measurements tell me 150x200 adding soil to a depth of of say 3" (or .25) divided by 27 (cu/ft/yd) = 278 yards. A tamdem dump can haul 15 yards so 18 truck loads times whatever topsoil and hauling is in your area. Add in the seed, starter fertilizer, and straw (your # sounds fair) and you have a price on getting your yard in.

For this size area- I would do what Lone Cowboy says, unless you were a customer I was bidding, you should loosen up the soil you already have so the roots will penetrate into and make a healthy lawn.
