You may have to provide more information. At least I'm not familiar with the super 12. Did you buy it new? How old is it? Which engine does it have? Do you have the manual? If not, can't you get one from Sears? One thing I've always liked about Sears is their exploded views and parts lists in the manuals. And of course, Sears is where I'd probably go for parts.

so the head gasket is definitely blown, amazing thing is it still runs. i started it up today and i can feel air coming out from between the head and block. numbers are as follows:

Tractor:
Model: 917.25311
Serial: 1377

Engine:
Model: 143-602022
Serial: 1029E

Let's see if this link works right. Sears shows to have that head gasket in stock for $5.32. Original part #32246A, substitute #32246B.

In the event that you need other parts, go to Sears.com and toward the upper right corner, click on PartsDirect, then enter the model number (in the current case, the engine model number instead of the mower number). Of course it shows some parts in stock, some replaced with new numbers, and some no longer available.

ok, i finally got the thing apart, and the head, piston, and valves look ok. no cracks or scratches. is there any specific order in which to install a new head gasket? or do i just slap the new one on there and bolt the head back on? how can i clean these things up without damaging?

Do you have a die grinder? They make some pads that look like non-metallic scouring pads to use on a die grinder. They work great for removing old gasket material, carbon, and even to de-glaze brake rotors.

Use a torque wrench to make sure you don't over tighten the gasket and crush it so bad you end up causing it to fail again. Also as Bird said make sure you scrape off all mating surfaces.

When you tighten the bolts do it in a cross pattern like you would then replacing a wheel.

no i did not buy it new. i do not have the manual. it is very old. sears did not have the gasket. how ever i did get it ordered through the local co-op. it will take abot 10 days. Do you by chance know what the head bolts torque on?
