SCV Boots and Hand Throttle Repairs

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm getting some shop time in today and have 2 items to address. The first is finishing up the SCV boot replacement job that I started yesterday. I'm having trouble understanding how this is supposed to go back together. I was able to take everything apart by "cheating" on one of the ball sockets. The threading on the valve rod was rough enough that the nut stuck and enabled me to turn the rod itself with a wrench to separate it from the threaded end of the ball socket. After cleaning everything up including the threads and adding the new boot, I can't do that. So I have to remove at least one of the individual ball sockets from the handle.

I removed the retaining hooks but neither of the ball sockets will separate from the studs on the handle. Is there a special tool to separate them?

I never had any personal experience with that type of ball joint BUT my observation from viewing 2040 parts catalog is that there's a retaining ring (key 2) PN 56M7004 that must be removed to separate ball & socket.

Those rings (referred to as hooks in my parts manual) have been removed...they seem no closer to coming apart then when they were in. Maybe some heat will help?

Oh, and I never included the issue with the hand throttle. I've tried to find info on it and haven't had any luck understanding anything enough to fix the issue. Its been stuck since I bought it, so I'm not familiar with how it works. Does the lever get pulled upward/raised to move the pin along the shaft to enable it to turn? Either way, my is stuck from turning or raising (if that's what its supposed to do). I've put more PB in that thing than just about anything else I've ever worked on. What else can I do to free this thing up?

Have you looked at the schematics for that assembly in jdparts?

Sure, plenty of times. I have a parts manual here in the shop that I reference often.

Clean shaft upper piece with sandpaper ....remove pin ....hold upper piece and twist shaft and let the spring press the shaft down. Now start to remove pins and parts from the bottom.
Clean the shaft. Replace that clutchplate and reassemble.

Nothing special about the throttle control shaft just some spring loaded friction washers. I'll suggest to apply some good penetrating oil such as PB-blaster or Kroil then lever probably will get too loose & won't stay where you set it!

I'll add IIRC disassembly of throttle lever friction washers & spring as DLTTrekkers describes will ""try ones patience"". LOL

After assemble all pull lever up and then install top rollpin

Haven't been on here in a little while. I ended up getting the ball joints apart after realizing how they worked (never worked with these before). I didn't know there was a spring/ring/retainer inside the ball that moves into a groove in the socket when the ball is pulled. There was so much corrosion that I was betting the groove was clogged not allowing the spring to recess. I sprayed it w/brake cleaner and got a lot out but there was no way to get to where I actually needed to. I soaked them in Evapo-rust and bingo, they came right apart. Amazing stuff.

As far as the hand throttle, I'm choosing to concede the battle for now. I broke off part of the housing around the pin trying to knock it out. I've seen zero movement and either I'm doing something wrong or its way more stuck than I want to give it credit for. Parts diagram looks straight forward and you all have supported that view. I'll move on for now as its not needed for my intended use of the tractor.

The tool I usually use to pop ball socket linkage apart is needle nose pliers. Stick the plier points in on both sides of the ball and just pry the socket off. Your penetrate solution is often required as well.
