Since there are many different pieces of equipment that people call "scrapers", I've got a link to a video of what I'm talking about in action.

These things seem to be ubiquitous at large construction sites, but until recently I didn't know anyone made them for smaller tractors. I'm thinking about sizes under 5 yards capacity. Rowse and Durabilt both make 3 yard models and Hoelscher makes 3 models from .9-1.3 yards capacity. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are there any other manufacturers of sub 5 yard models?

I could see how one of these could be real handy for me. Being able to move 3 yards of dirt at a time with a compact/utility tractor seems almost too good to be true. A person could take on some pretty ambitious jobs with these things if they work well. I'd love to hear more about how well they work from anyone who is using or has used these things.

I think a dump trailer would be a better option. A tooth bar really helps with digging and a dump trailer would have other uses as well.

There's definitely some advantages and disadvantages between the two. With the dump trailer you'd need two machines - a tractor or truck to pull the dump trailer and a tractor or excavator to load the trailer. If a person is working alone you'd have to keep hopping from the one machine to the other. The scraper looks cool to me in that it's just a load and go operation with one machine.

I've thought about that. It should pull about a 10 yard scraper. That might work pretty well for somethings I'd like to do. The problem with the big tractor is it's too big for some of the spots I'd like to use a scraper or something similar.

I have some very old roads that go through timber that I'd like to restore to a functional trail sort of state. The 2590 is too wide without taking off the duals and even then it's probably too tall to go down those roads. I could cut down more trees, but I like them and would rather leave them lining the trails. I have a CIH 685 that I use for smaller jobs and that's more what I'm thinking of for pulling a scraper.

I guess I should update my profile. That probably causes some confusion.

That's the one. A stately looking machine if I do say so myself! 😁

If you are moving the material any distance further than a 1/4 mile, an excavator and dump trailer or a dump truck would be more efficient.
