I have a Scag with the Hydro Gear zt 3400 trans axles. I'm looking for some transaxle fluid recommendations that don't cost $70+ a gallon...? Hydor gear service support shows:

Typically, an engine oil with a minimum rating of 9.0 cSt (55 SUS) at 230° F (110° C) and an API classification of SL is recommended. A 20W50 engine oil has been selected for use by the factory and is recommended for normal operating procedures.

Considering Scag fluid is 70+ but a good conventional 20w50 is 25-35 and synth is right about 60.

Walmart has Castrol synthetic blend for $22 for 5 quarts. I'd run with that. I would not pay $70 for Scag oil.

The landscape company that I service mowers for uses mobile 1 20w50 synthetic v-twin motor cycle oil. Bout $9-$10/qt at napa.

They dont hold that much oil so its not a bank breaker. Some ZTR's call for 15w40 or even 10w30 for hydros.

Not that I advise it...but in my scag that is 17 years old and 3000hrs now.....I have been using rotella T6 5w40 because I always have jugs of it because I use it in everything. Mower engine, two cars, diesel truck, tractor, and excavator.
