Sc2400 won't start, just clicks

My Yanmar Sc2400 won't start. It was working fine, my 18 year old grandson took it out yesterday to chop up leaves, shut it down to add fuel and now it just clicks. I think its the starter solenoid but I'm not sure if there is a fix or just replace the whole starter. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Battery is fine, fully charged.

First check all battery connections and where ground attaches to frame. Last time this happened to me I had my wife try to start it while I twisted on battery lugs. As soon as I twisted the positive cable the tractor started.

While checking these connections check the starter mount bolts for tightness. They are how the starter gets ground to complete the circuit. Is there a jumper from the engine to the frame? Check it. Remove the connectors from the battery and clean them - inside and out. Is your battery fully charged?

If it is the solenoid, and it's one of the can-type with the bakelite end with two copper bolts, you can take it apart, carefully tap out the square head copper bolts and turn them 180 degrees so that the uneroded part of the head contacts the plunger disc. Burnish all the electrical contacts up with a wire wheel. I did that when my forklift acted up and it was like a new starter.

If the starter was working just fine before this, chances are high that it's in the cable ends or a connection somewhere, solenoids usually get progressively worse.

Battery is fully charged but what does the voltage drop to when you hit the key? <9 = weak (fully charged) battery.....Have you tried jumping it?

I have to agree with the above, a fully charged battery doesn't mean it's good. And if the voltage drops dramatically after one start attempt, then it's probably bad.
