Saw Blade Grinders at work in the Mill

Youtube video, 90's tv show intro, showing blade grinders working. Way before cnc. Maybe operated by cams or air cylinders. Anybody ever operate one of these grinders. Judging by the amount of spark they weren't worried about metal removal off the teeth.
The one log load ain't bad either.

I have never used a grinder like that

but my chain saw grinder works much the same and If one put a few timed and rotating wheels or levers on it with levers on it one could automate it in a similar manor besides the dual bevel of the grinder wheel,

I love watching the blade sharpened, but I had to laugh when I saw it was from Twin Peaks, by David Lynch. David Lynch is a bit of a far out film maker. He has done some strange ones, but is very good- visuals are perfect!

Way back in the early 60's used to work in a timber mill.
Never seen a circular saw sharpener like the first part of the movie ( for the few circular blades the saw mill used the saw doctor used to sharpen by hand) but the second part sharpening a band saw watched that lots and at that time the machines had no hydraulics etc, all the saw movements, grinding , clamping the blade etc were done mechanically with cams and cranks etc
The mill was old as was the machinery but we had remarkably few breakdowns in my time there and when they did fail was quick and easy to get them up and running again.

I'm guessing they may have made it spark a bit more then it was supposed to. Real life rarely makes good television, but you know that. I have seen the sharpening of leather cutting blades at a tannery while the machine is in operation in the late 80's. Even that was putting out some sparks and it was sure not adjusted for out viewing benefit.

Thats what it looks like in real life. I work in a hard wood mill they change band saw blades twice a day on two headrigs and two resaws. These blades are 12" wide roughly 40-42 ft long. The grinder has two motors one runs the grinding rock. One runs the timeing cam to andvance the blade. The saw filer will make adjustments as needed depending on what is being sawed how dull the band is.

CNC was tried in some parts of common engineering (like engine machining) in the 1980's but when i googled to find backup for this claim, i found that actual NC controls were already developed in the mid 1950's... Way beyond the scope of the average engineering corp's funds, but it was available..

In the 60's I used one very similar to sharpen the huge carbide toothed cutters used in milling the transmission and engine blocks at Case. Worked off a cam, different cams for different cutters. They did throw sparks from the steel part of the tool which the carbide was braised ?sp. to.

I was working on CNC mills and lathes back in the 70's. And they were not new then.

I'm aware of all that. I have a mill with a bandit cnc control from the seventies. I was talking about these blade grinders. I'm thinking the grinders are from the forties, maybe fifties.

You might have operated the milling machine that milled the block and transmission of my 56 case vac 14.

Sure be nice to see a video of those in action. Those are some big bandsaws. I hate changing the blade on my horizontal and it is only 12 ft. long and 1 inch wide. Those must be a bear and to do it twice a day.
