We have never owned a dog but have had several cats. One thing I’ve found is that often dogs and cats don’t mix. Some dogs will leave them alone, other dogs just like to chase them and some want to kill them. They otherwise aren’t vicious or mean but when it comes to cats……..

Our German Sheppard try's to play with the cat on occasion. The cat stands its ground and usually swats at her, closing the attempt.

The cats brother (RIP) would run up a tree if the dog made a run at him.

I think the animals acclimate themselves to the owners and how they behave when threats are about.

A skunk crossed my path one night with the GS, "not my dog", lucky there was a six foot chain link fence between the dog and skunk. The dog went into attack mode before I even knew what was going on. I called it off and all ended well. Now, IF she sees a skunk, no bother.

Accidents happen, but some situations are an accident waiting to happen. Did the dogs have collars, licenses, and owner identifications on them? These would be indicators that the owner cares for the dogs vs. letting them roam free and unattended.

"Failure to confine a canine" is a legal charge that carries some consequence. Hopefully, the owners understand that they did something wrong and will correct it to avoid future issues.
I think the OP should at least talk to the owner of the dogs and inform him about the dogs killing his cat.
I know some in my area would have taken the dogs to the "train station".

That has been my experience. If a dog has never seen a cat, some of them need to be introduced in a controlled way to understand that it's not another wild critter to hunt.

I have one dog in particular that absolutely loves every person he meets on sight, but he also enjoys hunting moles, and he will kill a squirrel, if he can catch it. I don't know whether he has ever seen a cat, but I wouldn't be too surprised if he went after it.

Our dogs wear gps/zap collars when they run free, but we have still had rare occasions where they left the property. In some cases, you can literally turn your head for a couple of seconds, and they are gone.

My first dog was attacked by cats 3 times.
Once she was at my side on lead. The second was someplace in Vermont, she was tied to my door while I was getting ice cream. The third time was also in Vermont; a stray cat had been hanging around the motel and one night when I got out of my truck it jumped IN and attacked my dog, who was in the back seat minding her own business. Miraculously that cat survived- I almost took it down to the river and tied a rock around it's neck.
Yet each of those 3 times people thought it was funny.

My kids have two large dogs and two cats. One cat just lays down if the dogs come running. They nose him around a bit and lose interest, to the point that the cat can now follow the dogs around and they don't care because they know it won't run.

The other cat immediately runs when the dogs move towards it, triggering a prey instinct in the dogs and they take off after it.

Both cats are pure white and the only physical difference is the color of their eyes.

To the OP, you have a kind heart. Sorry about the loss of your cat.

I agree with Hay Dude 100%. Regardless of any excuses the owner of the dog has, there's no excuse for allowing it to have that 'killer instinct' and be allowed to run loose. After all, it wasn't Moe running loose, it was the unattended killer dog.
Compensation, and lots of it, is due.

How much do you compensate someone for a cat their dog killed? Hard to put a value on that. I’d probably ask them to write me a check for ————-, you fill in the amount in the name of the local animal shelter.

Very sorry to read this.

I had a Shepherd who was very sweet and gentle. Left him alone with a calf for a few minutes, and he tore its ears up.

Good question.

Courts typically limit compensation for a pet's death to the animal's fair market value and any related veterinary expenses, often capping total damages around $10,000 in many states. Emotional distress damages are rarely awarded unless specific circumstances apply, such as egregious behavior by the defendant.

All of this is really unnecessary. The law officer (dog catcher) should fine the defendant for the amount the county or township typically cites someone with dogs that run loose and probably more if they kill other people’s pets.

The defendant, if they were worth a spit, would gracefully compensate the OP with some kind of financial compensation. That’s called having grace and being a good neighbor. They should give the OP at least $500, imo.

Many dog owners do not realize that owning dogs comes with responsibility for what those canine teeth can do.

Extreme example, but does anyone remember back in 2001, the tragedy in San Francisco where Diane Whipple was killed by her neighbor’s Cane Corso killer dogs? I knew her. She was a phenomenal women’s lacrosse player and athlete.
