Left side full of oil. Tore down and cleaned and replaced seals (What a pain to find Metric Seals on Saturday). The seals ride on a spacer that slipes over a O-ring (which I didn't have a replacement) so I RTV sealent inside of the spacer where the O-ring goes 'cause I couldn't see where it would turn on the shaft is this correct? My main question though is when you lay a straight edge across the centerline of the brake disc's there is no difference so the lining doesn't stick out further than the hub. I can see wear mark on the inside housing where the OD of the disc hub had been hitting. The lining looked almost new. What's up with the lining not being able to wear before the hub hits. bjr

I wish I could help you more, but I would never-ever substitute RTV for an O-ring, I would wait until I could get the proper O-ring.:confused2:

I used the RTV and the Oring. I didn't want the oil to seep around the splines and I had hope this would help. bjr

bjr ?
Although this post is 4 years old, If you remember,
Was wondering if you had to do a complete tear down of all the brake housing, including adjusting rods, etc.
to get to the leaking seal ?
I have a 304 that has a little oil in brake housing, first noticed by seal/cap on adjusting rod leaking,
I removed small bottom drain bolt & got a little oil out
I have not dismantled brake system yet
My parts schematic shows seals & O-rings on backside of housing
Unless oil has ruined friction plate I don't think they need replaced, as brakes work fine

I was wondering if this seal is the one bjr replaced
Looks like it may be accessible without removing the last brake housing, but
the brake schematic shows the seal(s) & o-ring from the back side
If he got this far, it's just 4 more bolts to get this last & largest housing off

Thanks for reply, bjr
I just wanted to have all my ducks in a row when & if I remove brake housings.
If seal(s) are all I need I may just go ahead & pre-order seal(s) & O-Ring.
Brakes still work good & not any oil coming from bottom drain hole now

bjr, or anyone who has replaced brakes or seals ?
Did fenders, foot platforms, & rops have to be removed ?
Looks like the 2 u-bolts removal & the brakes are accessible ?
