Satoh 650-G
Ok. I'm a newbie to this forum and to tractors in general but I decided to take on a restoration project. I acquired a Satoh 650G with the Mazda motor. The tractor has been sitting where the guy left it 8 years ago and hasn't been started since. My question is aside from the obvious like oil change...filter...gas...spark plugs/wires etc...etc. is there anything in particular that I should do prior to turning this motor over to prevent damaging it. Finding that parts are alittle scarce and I'm trying to avoid a preventable situation. Hour gauge shows 800 and according to the individual i got it from, it is accurate. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

I have an International Harvester 284 with the same engine. For a gasoline engine, they are very respectable, have good power, are quite fuel efficient, and so on.

If it's sat for a long time, I would try to turn the engine over slowly with a socket on the crankshaft nut. Pull the spark plugs first (label or mark the wires first!) and everything should turn over smoothly and relatively easily. You want to make sure there isn't any water or fuel in the cylinders if it has sat too long. Otherwise, I think you're on the right track. Good luck!

Appreciate the info. I know just enough about engines to get me in trouble. I am somewhat concerned about moisture issues in the engine. Checked dip stick and it had a white film up towards the top. I am assuming that indicates moisture. Are gaskets such as oil pan, valve cover, easy to find at a NAPA parts house?

I don't know, I've never tried (or had to) deal with that. I would imagine that silicone gasket maker would work fine, though. Ignition components like the distributor cap, rotor, and so forth are available. I'm nearly certain that Valley Power would have all of the gaskets and other pieces, though.

Thanks for the info. Emailed Valley and waiting on response.
