I watched a TV show about that cannery a few weeks ago. I think they said they are not even sardines, but small herring, labeled as sardines. The herring fishery collapsed, as did the cod fishery, from overfishing. Too much of a good thing. :(

That article mentions small members of the herring family so I don't think they've tried to fool anyone. According th Wikipedia there are 21 species that may be labelled as sardines.

Many years ago, I kind of like kippered herring better than sardines; firmer boneless, skinless meat, but the last time I tried any, I decided I now like the flavor and texture of sardines better.:rolleyes:

We have schools of menhaden in the summer along our southeastern coasts. I wonder if those menhaden, (pogies), are canned in the tins and called herring or sardines, also? They are good bait and they are netted for the fish oil and fish meal industries.

Now my mouth is watering and I think I will now go open a can of sardines.

Too bad about the US industry. And in my opinion the industry is not like the buggy whip industry.

I'm not saying they're trying to fool anyone. What I'm saying is I'll bet they were originally sardines. When those ran out, they switched to a different fish, then a different fish, then any small fish in the herring family, etc... the entire seafood industry is like that. Once they kill off one species, they start marketing a different species as either the same thing, or something better. What is disgusting is the waste kill that went on for decades and decades... they'd trawl for everything, catch everything, kill everything in the nets, but throw most of it back as by-catch and only keep the target species. What a waste. :mad:

I usually take a salad for lunch to work ...a few different kinds of lettuce, some cabbage, carrots, radish, celery....and I put a topper on, a variety of cheeses, sometimes leftover chili or lentils, maybe some leftover pasta..

A few months ago I decided to try some sardines as a topper and discovered....dang...they're good. I'm not setting any trends at work... most wrinkle their nose when they see what I'm eating and the smell if you get close is fragrant fishy. :licking:

The local grocer carries a number of different brands of sardines. I'm liking the King Oscar brand in olive oil right now. There's another brand from Morocco that's pretty good also in olive oil.

Anyone else like sardines? What do you have them with? what kind to you buy?

My favorite brand is the Crown Prince two layer Brisling Sardines in Olive oil.

I like them with most any cracker, or sometimes I just make a sandwich, I will have to try them on a salad, sounds good.

I'll like to say "thank you" to you guys... I have had a couple of cans of smoked oysters :thumbsup: and a couple cans of sardines (granted it was "sardines for beginners", boneless and skinless). Love them both... and will be brave enough to try a can that we buy for our dog... if he lets me.:laughing:

Sardines are great! Most of the younger kids don't seem to know about them.

Also...they are the best bait to use in a live catch trap for coons, possums, and cats. Punch a few small holes in the oil packed cans and place on the trap pan...

And furthermore...they are great to eat inside while at work with saltines. I sometimes throw the empty oily smelly cans in the office waste baskets of people who are the most annoying. Then I smile. You can get the enjoyment of a can of sardines twice that way...
