You might give some thought to a new drilled well to provide better water for the animals and what would not clog the plumbing. JMHO

That would be the ideal solution. However, the local geology is typically about 10-15 feet of topsoil and then granite bedrock. In most spots there is a layer of water on top of the bedrock and a shallow well can access it. Going deeper means drilling into the bedrock. The drinking water for my house is a drilled well that I believe goes down 400' into bedrock. It gets kind of pricey.

Your not providing potable water for your livestock?

I should clarify. When I said it was non-postable I meant this well is not meant for human consumption. The water is essentially pond water from a spring-fed pond, it's muddy but I don't believe there is anything nasty in it.

The pond muck will clog up the sand real fast. Sand filters I have seen, way back in my history were a bed that was fed by pressure from below. Good labor consumer when they needed to be cleaned up. I think they went out with the manual typewriter. Replaceable media seems to be the way today. Not practical for the OPs situation, maybe a skimmer to collect water from the surface. why feed your animals water you would not drink. even most wild animals are smarter than to drink bad water. My dog sure wouldn't.

I figure it would take about four cubic yards of sand to fill the well. What I'm thinking is that it would be a large surface area and a large amount of sand and take a long time to clog, if ever. If there were naturally-occuring layers of sandy soil and silty soil the water would find its way through. Maybe it's a hare-brained idea, but it wouldn't cost me much to try.
