I am curious what methods folks use to store sand at the their homes / farms and how the sand is spread on snowy and/or icy driveways. Pics will be helpful.

Sand only, or sand and calcium chloride.

We had a terribly ice driveway most of the winter in WI because of living in a woods and one a small hill with a 700 driveway. Cover with tarp for sure. I got a couple yards of sand and salt mix and dumped it in a good spot. Then it worked best for me to take a shovel and fling it out onto the ice. It only had to be thin because the salt would make it stick and I would have enough traction.

I have about a yard of salt-sand covered with a tarp. As mentioned above it doesn't take much, throw a shovelful out across your icy drive and it spreads itself well.

I have a few pails of sand in the warm garage. I spread about 1 pail, by hand, when needed, on a flat 200ft gravel drive. The concrete area between the buildings is always kept clear of ice by scraping clean with plow. I don't use much sand because we have boots that have metal teeth on them for icy conditions.

The town supplies sand/salt mix. I fill up plastic buckets at the DPW when needed. Built a shelf on my back blade to hold 2 buckets so I can stop and sand the area that need it. Sand Shelf.jpg

Our town does the same (don't think it has salt in it though...town doesn't even use salt on the roads much if at all). There's a big pile marked "resident sand" at the town garage. I'll keep a couple 5 gal buckets around at a time. We'll also use wood ashes.

My driveway is flat gravel. It gets very icy but we don't use any sand or salt. I don't like tracking that scrap in the house.

I use to work for a municipality..i never want to see salt again.

I usually price pickup load day of need, also spare load to one side just in case.

I wonder if a fertilizer spreader would work for large areas like a parking lot. Thinking of my church. Several guys have quads which are easier to transport than my BX or maybe a riding lawnmower.
