HI
Any body got pics of sand barrels beside their drive ways for winter use.Igot two 55 gallon drums with the tops cut off.Iwas thinking about laying them on the side[proping up one end somehow]I also will take my mig welder ,and weld ahinge on it,so it can have a plywood end, to keep the weather out. Probably a stupid idea:confused:cause the salt i have to mix in to keep the sand from freezing will eat the barrel. But the PRICE OF free:Dwas in my range ,for the drums.
Ihave 650 feet of driveway to keep blown out ,and some real steep places,to keep sanded.Currently i lug the stuff in 5 gallon pails from a shed, but doing that after each storm gets old.SO AM I:p
AFTER THOUGHT ,should i spray some undercoating or something on the inside to slow down rusting out from the salt?
Iappreciate your thoughts on this.

One of my summer projects was expanding a storage space so that I could get the implements under cover, which is where they are now. I also built a couple of dollys - one for the wood chipper and the other for the snow blower (or BH) so I can move them around as needed.

You're right, the BH is off for the season and the snow blower is mounted and ready to go. I also added front and rear work lights - now all we need is some snow, which will be here all too soon, I'm sure.

Don't have pics, but in NewHamshire a few years back I noticed a cool idea.

They mounted 45gal drums on saw horses with the front legs shorter than the back ones.
Also they only cut off 1/2 of the tops.
With the tops only half cut the sand would not spill out.
Being tilted the top was protruding over the half opening preventing water from entering.
The saw horses served to have the drums higher than the curb snow banks.

Apparently the city kept the bbls full and it was up to the merchants and homeowners to do the spreading as required.

Smart thinking!

I picked-up some used large blue plastic barrels (about 50 gal) with large plastic lids at Clark's farm supply store in NH for about $5 or $10 each. I don't know what they were originally used for.

I keep them on a simple low wood frame that tilts the front up about 15 degrees. As they are plastic there is no problem mixing salt with the sand.

Being from a mild winter climate I'm kind of guessing on what you are wanting to do, but I have found the plastic barrels also with removeable tops going for about the same price. Feed and farm supply stores that carry bulk quanities of feed might be a good place to look. Here most carry barrels of some sort. Off brand tool dealers and Flea market type places often have some around here too. Most of what I see are individuals that have them advertised on the side of the road. As to the original contents most don't ask or tell.
