I had an interesting minor problem with my TC 21 D. It wouldn't start and I got looking into it and checked the bullet connectors that go to the pto and other safety switches. I unplugged the one that goes to the pto lever and clipped a 12volt neon tester to the wire and grounded the other to the frame and she starts. Any one else had this problem?

Just curious.. will it start with the connector simply unplugged.. or does that free end need to be grounded.. etc. In other words.. is the sensor NO or NC?

The only thing I've ever had happen with my 24D is sometimes either when I'm shifting into high range or engaging the mid-pto (I'm not sure which) I'll bump the rear PTO selector it will be ever so slightly "engaged." The PTO won't be turning or anything, but it won't let the tractor start. Pull it back to where it is supposed to be and it'll fire right up.

I often wear "cargo shorts" and found that when I jump off a tractor, sometimes the bottom of the shorts will catch on one of the selector levers. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Have that happen a couple times and it will change the meaning of your phrase: Pull it back to where it is supposed to be /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I don't usually where shorts, but I've done something similar last winter with my big Carhart coat. Jumped off the tractor and it caught one of the levers. Pulled in gear and kinda hung me there. Feet were barely touching the ground and I couldn't get turned back around to get back on the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Ended up having to loosen the coat up some so that I could get it up and over the lever. Was pretty embarrasing - nobody knew about it until now. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jim, I have no sympathy for you. You were basically suspended off the ground by the fabric under your armpits in that coat. Try being suspended just above ground level by that little strip of fabric in your CROTCH /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif that's what happens when you catch a lever with a baggy pair of shorts. Sort of puts an extra bit of spring in your step for a few minutes!

Needs to be grounded to start. I'm going to try moving the pto lever slightly as suggested by jwstewar. Thanks for the reply.

On my TC18, instead of getting dirty and properly adusting the safety switch contacts, I've just gotten into the habit of banging back on the PTO lever to make sure it's "homed in" before trying to start the tractor. It used to work OK; I'm probably not making it any better by whacking it, but being basically a procrasinator I'll wait until it really needs to be fixed before diging into it.

Thanks to all the good suggestions by the TBN family members, I was able to fix the problem by adjusting the switch and repositioning it. I certainly learned alot about a potential problem area and how to fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi ! I just read your posts and I am having a starting problem with my brand new NH TN65D. I am having trouble getting the starter switch to turn with the key. Everything is in neutral, the emergency brake is on, and the PTO is off etc. I have to play with the switch, jiggle the gear levers, and mess with the controls for 10 to 15 minutes before it will free up. The dealer said he ordered a new ignition switch for me, but I am not sure thats the problem. All the safety interlocks and connections are a nightmare to try to figure out. A brand new tractor shouldn't have this problem. Remember when quality control was important to the manufactures? I guess when the price goes up, everything else goes down.

Does the manual have a list of the safety switches.

It took me 10 minutes to start my 2002 NH 7610s when they dropped it off. I was looking at everything.. pto.. clutch.. gearshift.. etc.. then I found it.. the RANGE selector ( H-N-L ) has to be in neutral to start.. though the main tranyy doesn't have to be.. go figure..

Sorry you are having trouble. Hopefully the fine folks on TBN will have some suggestions on your problem. Mine was simple and once I read the suggestions on this site I was able to fix it. It certainly is frustrating to have problems with new equipment. Good luck.

Absolutely!
That %&**#$$ connector has come undone I don't know how many times while grubbing out my woods. I have spent more time on my back under my TC29D than I care to remember.
Started to "bypass" the switch, but thought better of it. Very poor design.
