Safety chains on PTO shaft shields?

My take on that is to not grease the two plastic halves where they slide together.. but that if it did have zerks over the nylon race.. to grease them.. etc.

I'm with you Soundguy,

If it's got a zerk, it gets greased. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Funny....

I just recently purchased a new implement-the first I've ever had with this plastic PTO shielding. At first, not knowing what the chain and plastic loops on the shaft were for, I simply used them to keep the shaft hung up off the ground and out of the dirt.
I then happened across a thread like this some time back mentioning these chain/shield and it hit me what they were for....I'd never thought of using them in this way.

So, first time I use it afterwards I hook the chain to the connected PTO shaft as it's supposed to be, engage the PTO, and "pop!". First rattle out of the box the little plastic loophole breaks clean away. I stopped it and checked the shaft to see if it was in a bind...but it spun free like it should.
So, I doubt I'll replace it anytime soon..

The insurance underwriter for the policy on my bush hogging business pulls "pop inspections" about 3 times a season. They check a few things and go home.... In the last year, they've looked to see if the PTO gaurd chains are in place. I've had to make a more durable chain and a better way to attach it to the gaurd. I use a metal "band" around the gaurd. It has a (welded on) loop to attach a chain. I use 1/8th " "aircraft cable" and crimp on collars to make a loop at the end of the cables. With 1200 to 1500 hours per season on each mowing tractor, the odds of an accident increase proportionally. So far.......no problems. (To pacify the insurance man, I have a rule in place for my operators.... IMMEDIATE dismissal if they get off the tractor while the mower is in gear and/or turning. NO EXCEPTIONS.)

( Such as: a bus load of lawyer kids breaks down just off your property. They let the kids out to stretch. They see your nice shiny tractor just sitting there all inviting. 10 of 'em climb on it--what--the key is in it. One starts it, tosses it in gear and others flip on the PTO lever, only to gravely injure the others riding on the mower deck.

Why did they get hurt--no pto shields. Oh, but you say they were trespassing and had no right to be there.

Wrong!. You left the tractor where it was visible from the road and that is called an "attractive nuisance". In other words it was bound to entice someone to come onto your property to see it up close.

Attractive Nuisance Doctrine

The lawyers are gonna get us all until there will be no one with any money left to sue for. Then maybe they will turn on each other and devour their own kind.

Funny you mention that. i remember a while back.. few years.. decade? that cell phones were a big steal item.. especially in parked cars.. Police in miami said that if you left a phone in plain site in your car, that it was basically inviting the robbers... and was your fault.

With that kind of thinking.. what is the world coming to?
