How many have actually seen this product ?
Ryan Tow Behind Aerator

It looks to me like a good product for the lawn.

I would like to hear some input about this as I have no Dealer that is anywheres close to me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a Ryan towbehind aerator. It worked well, my only problem was crossing a walk, so I put a hydraulic cylinder on it. Then I found it not to be too convenient to back into small places to aerate. I sold that and got one for the TPH. That works fine, only no turns, just straight running. So I made a piece between the hitch and the aerator. I couldn't be happier . perfect setup.
I think the Rran is the best aerator, the weight is low in the tines. You can buy cheaper ones (not built near as well as the Ryan) but the weight has to be added, and the only place to put it is on the top, which makes it top heavy. I have a hill to work on, so the weight on the top goes to the lower pluggers leaving the high side almost out of the lawn. If you have a level lawn a cheaper plugger will do you. Those big cast wheels on the plugger have bearings. Long term plugger as long as they get greased.

I saw one at a JD dealer. Be prepared for the price tag. I think it was $1500+

The price doesn't sound too bad .I once priced a 4 ft. Land Pride that was $1300.00 and one would have had to add weight .(3 pt. hitch)

We have a small JD. I believe its a 50''. It is a Plug aerator and it was $499. Works really good and we made a cement block to put in the back. The tines can lift up for transport and has 2 digging depths. It's for a garden tractor though.

Lots of nice 3PH units out there. I love my Turfco TM-42. Turfco makes a 62" model also. My 3-Point hitch TM42 cost about $1,000 and weighs in around 600 pounds with all of the weight jugs filled.

Tomnky:

Another possibility is the Midwest 3pt aerator. You'll see quite a few discussions about them if you do a search.

Last year I was making the same decision, no regrets going with a 48" First Choice aerator (then made by Midwest) via Carver Equipment. Approx half the price of the LP you mentioned, just as sturdy.

yup the midwest aerator is the way to go. Used to be available branded as a first choice. I got mine from sweet farm equipment (a tbn advertiser)

Another option is CCM another TBN advertiser. They have the 48" model listed for $625. Expect to pay $100 +/- for shipping.

We have one 72" Midwest core aerator left. It weighs 428#, so you may not have to add weight. Call/email if interested, as it's at another site on consignment. We are 45 minutes north of the river, very driveable from Berea (150 miles).

Tomnky,

Midwest is the way to go for a real solid and more cost-effective aerator. If money is less of a concern, it's sure nice to be able to add and remove weight in the form of water. Also, if you ever want to be able to convert to a tow-behind unit, the Turfco system offers a good option, albeit considerably expensive.

Turfco does sell direct. Good customer service. I ordered the spare part pack with extra coring tines and hardware and replced one damaged by a rock this fall. The Turfco has bronze bushings with grease zerks, and I think the Midwest does too. You'll want to check on that.

Check out the video on the Turfco site if you want to see it in action. Turfco Link

Thanks for the reply Pete, And Thanks to Everyone...........I sure would like to hear more from anyone that has had some Experience with the Ryan as I am impressed with it as far as weight for the size.

I have a 36" 3-point hitch RYAN aerator. I picked it up used from a Rental Center that was going out of buisness.

My only problem with it is that when I bought it, it hadn't been used for quite a while and all the teeth (I guess that's what you call them) had a light layer of surface rust. As I use it, about half of the teeth pull will plugs out and deposit them on the ground, and with the other half the dirt stays jammed in the hole (holes are punched but no plugging is accomplished).

I have found that the more I use it the more it starts to work properly. I assume that this problem can occur with any of the aerators if they aren't used regularly.

DEALERS: I also found out that Ryan dealers are hard to find; not that they don't exist, they're just hard to find. About 2 to 3 years ago I accidently found that the Kubota dealer in Lebanon TN (outside Nashville) was a Ryan dealer. So I picked up a Ryan sales brochure and used the information to contact Ryan to find out where other dealers were. At that time the Ryan information did not even report the Lebanon Kubota dealer as one of their dealers. Last month I stumbled across another Ryan dealer in Maryville TN (outside Knoxville).

Just wondering if this Ryan Aerators are being manufactured in Sweden completely OR if some of their parts are being manufactured at their own factories in another country.
