Rutabagas

This evening we had a wonderful 4-generation dinner that included rutabaga stew (also included carrots, potatoes, onions, and garlic from our garden, plus fresh venison from out behind the barn). Homemade sour dough bread accompanied the meal.

We fixed a dish for Christmas dinner, half turnips and half potatoes, three strips of fried bacon crumbled, three large golden delicious apples fried in small amount of bacon grease. Three cloves of roasted garlic, one quarter tsp. thyme, mash potatoes, turnips, apples, garlic, and leave a little lumpy, add bacon crumbles, thyme, butter, one half cup butter milk, salt and pepper to taste. Watch out for flying utensils and elbows at the buffet line.

Root crops mashed up together with sauteed onion and garlic....just about any combination of potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, rutabagas....I guess I haven't tried parsnips yet, but I bet they'd work, too. Seems like good fall comfort food to me. I like things like colcannon (sp) too, which is basically cabbage in potatoes but also works well with other greens.
