Rusty wood stove.

Hello everybody, I am currently stationed overseas and my wife went to visit our house in West Virginia and low and behold it is a wreck. I let a "friend" live there for free and there is a lot of out of whack but the wood stove in the house is covered in rust!! The sides of the wood stove looks great but the top is covered in rust. The wood stove is a Harman and not a cheap stove, What can I do to fix the rust without painting or anything like that, also keep in mind that my wife will be the one working on it. Is this the top of a cook stove or a heating stove that is painted?

How bad is the rust? I realise that it may be difficult to post pictures, but that would be a big help if possible.

I believe the stove is painted, can't see why a stove wouldn't be painted.

She may be able to wire brush it real good, then get some high temp paint at the hardware store. Better cans of spray paint have porcelain in it.

I'd wire brush any loose rust and then spray it with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. This paint is a combo of primer plus a chemical that changes the rust (iron oxide) to (a black) iron sulphide.

Thanks for the quick reply's I was think like some warm soapy water and then once it drys put some vegetable oil it, guess I was way off base.

Wire brushing, followed by proper stove paint. Then when running it for the first time, you will need a lot of ventilation as the paint gives off fumes and smoke. But the heat fully cures it so it should look great for a while.

From the looks of it rain was coming down the stovepipe and getting onto the stove. There is a chimney cap / flashing / rail collar problem up on the roof for sure. Might want to fix that too.

Here is just 1 suitable type of paint. They will all say something similar.

I think they had a kettle on the stove and that's what did it. The roof and chimney is good the roof and stuff was replaced in June 2012.
