Well just to finish this thread up (hopefully). After cleaning with methanol, and then a TSP soak I inspected the inside of the tank. No rust that I could find. The tin/lead coating looked good. So I cleaned the outside, put a new coat of paint on the outside and reinstalled with new hoses.
It has been working for a month now, no signs of any "stuff" in the new fuel filter. So with any luck this might have been it.
