Might be old news to some of you, but I ran across a safe and easy way to remove rust from parts using electrolysis. Lots of websites on Google, one is rust removal Supposed to be great for stubborn old bolts too. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Just remember the part about the hydrogen gas that is formed when doing this so use a well ventilated area(outside comes to mind). Also remember that you are putting elctricity into water... ZZZZAAAAPPPPPP!!!!! So be careful. Other than that, pretty cool. I did a similar experiment back in grade school only the idea was to make hydrogen, not take rust off of a part. We placed the electrode into the opening of an upside down beaker filled with water and the gas bubbles had no where to go but up into the beaker, forcing the water out. When it was over we had a beaker full of hydrogen gas..... guess what we tried to do with it /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

... it didn't work. We couldn't light it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

MR,
Hydrogen burns with an invisible flame. So you may have ignited it without even knowing.

I am glad some of you liked this idea. I have a couple other sites bookmarked on my other computer, that talked about some other ideas for the container and adapting it to the part. One guy used a PVC pipe tube for a cylinder de-rusting job, etc. Basically if the part and the sacrificial anode can fit into a non-metallic item, and it holds water, you can take the rust off. When I think of the awkward stuff I've tried to wirewheel /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, this wins hands down /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
If you hit a search engine with something like battery charger rust removal, you'll see this is a popular topic.

that is a coll link good info, I never knew it was THAT easy!

Now I have to do some building ... Wonder if you can make a SS tank and insulate it from the dirt, and use the hole thing as the + side?

Actually you can't just use stainless. One of the other sites was better on this point. You need to have something that will rust. Something has to give in this process and it is whatever rusty metal you attach to the + side. One of the other good sites I found used one of the cheap plastic storage bins, it has a good cover for when you aren't using it, etc. that seemed pretty good if most of your parts fit in it, otherwise it a custom job for the container.

I beleive there is a list of noble metals that ranks them in accordance to thier EMP. [ not sure of the terminology ] This should tell which types of material to use. Electro plating makes use of this information.

Sorry for the vagness of my post but I'm well over my head on this.Just some vaque memories.
