Here is some info I just discovered when I wanted to use a 3 pt hitch wood chipper on my 1023E. I had a chance to borrow a 3 pth wood chipper recently but read in my owners manual that I couldn't run either the mid or rear pto unless I was in the tractor seat. OK then, how do I sit in the seat and feed the chipper at the same time? I talked with my JD sales rep. and he agreed this was odd but couldn't offer any suggestions. However, it turns out that I just ordered the newly offered tech manual for this model, all 628 pages. After reading through it I find that the rear PTO can be run without anyone present in the seat. The running conditions need to be set as follows.

1. Parking brake on
2. Transmission in neutral
3. Select Rear PTO only
4. Start engine with seat unoccupied
5. Engage PTO

It worked, the rear PTO runs fine with me not in the seat. Then I tried the same proceedure but I sat in the seat during startup. The engine started and the PTO ran but when I raised off the seat the engine shut down.

I don't know why the operators manual doesn't make this clear.

Going to try it on my 2305... see if they're the same.

No dice. Not the same.

I imagine the JD sales rep who couldn't offer any suggestions was pleased to see you buy a 628 page manual.

I'm glad you got it figured out at the end if the day. What PTO chipper did you get to try out? Brand and model I mean. Also, how did your 1023 handle it? Just curious.

I have a ton of brush coverage on my property that needs to go... Plus a lot of low limbs. I've researched purchasing one, but can't bring myself to spending that much. You're pretty fortunate to have been able to borrow one.

I have a Mighty Mac Chipper/Shredder and a Wallenstein BX62S for our larger tractor...

The Wallenstein chippers are heavy, heavy duty. Depending on the size tractor you have, I would highly recommend the BX42 (25-40hp) or the BX62 (if you have 50+ HP tractor for the 62).

I've heard good things about the Wallenstein BX42. The closest dealer to me is about 60 miles away, so I haven't seen one in person. My tractor is a 26hp 2520, but my dad has a 30hp New Holland. Thanks for your reply.

I would go with the 42S over the 32s then, the PTO range for the 42s is 18-60, where the 32S is 12-30.

So just in case you decide to upgrade, or your father does, you have some comfort range with the 42S. The Ideal 'HP' range for the 42S is 35-40, but as long as you're not shoving 10 inch slabs or full 4 inch trees in it all the time... I don't see why 26hp wouldn't be fine.

Most of the brush that needs clearing is just that, brush. Probably 1 and 2" stuff. There are a lot of folks around here that would want anything in the 4" range as firewood or wood for a campfire. Either way having some growing room is always a good idea.
