Here is some info I just discovered when I wanted to use a 3 pt hitch wood chipper on my 1023E. I had a chance to borrow a 3 pth wood chipper recently but read in my owners manual that I couldn't run either the mid or rear pto unless I was in the tractor seat. OK then, how do I sit in the seat and feed the chipper at the same time? I talked with my JD sales rep. and he agreed this was odd but couldn't offer any suggestions. However, it turns out that I just ordered the newly offered tech manual for this model, all 628 pages. After reading through it I find that the rear PTO can be run without anyone present in the seat. The running conditions need to be set as follows.
1. Parking brake on
2. Transmission in neutral
3. Select Rear PTO only
4. Start engine with seat unoccupied
5. Engage PTO
It worked, the rear PTO runs fine with me not in the seat. Then I tried the same proceedure but I sat in the seat during startup. The engine started and the PTO ran but when I raised off the seat the engine shut down.
I don't know why the operators manual doesn't make this clear.
