Does anyone out there know of a story of a rumour that may have destroyed or hurt a person. I have a rumour that has started within my company and I need to put a stop to it now as it is not true. So if anyone knows of a story it would help me a lot.

What I am looking for is to show the guy causing the problems what can happen when he starts unneccessary rumours.

thanks in advance

Not sure how knowing of a rumor that hurt someone can have anything to do with stopping another rumor. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Rumors probably feed on the mystery and the possible thought (or non-thought) that they will hurt someone. It's ugly, and they are not always true. Then again, sometimes they are, so not easy to tell if it is a rumor or gossip or the truth.
Sounds like a dilema if you are trying to stop it. It may just add credence to the rumor.

Here's one...

Once upon a time there was a guy that started an unneccessary rumor at our company, but he doesn't work here anymore.
The End.

What is an "unnecessary" rumor? Is there such a thing?

I like the one liner given by MossRoad /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

How does one know 'who' starts the rumors? If I ever started one, I would at least start out saying "I heard that.............". No one ever believed any rumors I started anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I used to be the Rumor Control Officer.

My job was to ferret out all rumors -- and if I hadn't heard a good one by 10:00 am -- to start one.

Murph,

You know the guy. Think of something that would make him mad or upset then fabricate (but don't disseminate) a rumor accordingly. Then ask/tell him about the rumor. Once he takes the defensive, explain that you made it up and nobody else knows.... but how does it feel?

The problem with rumors is that what you tell someone gets told with more detail as each person tells it.

I would say with more "LIES" rather than more detail.

If you know for a fact that it's not true, then you could spend the time to prove it wrong.

Get yourself and an audience (fellow employees) and have the rumoror and the rumoree present. There's nothing like proving someone is a lier, in front of a crowd.

Not sure you would want to do this though. It could/probably would cause you more grief than it would be worth.
