well got ambitious today and decided to change the sprocket gear oil in my mini excavator(kubota kx41-3v)at 214hrs. Book says to do it at 100hrs. decided to do the 250hr oil and filter too, since I was getting dirty anyway. My neighbor stopped by in the middle of things. He has a few pieces of equipment, couple of JD tractors(37hp and 88hp), bobcat skidsteer, bulldozer etc. when he seen me doing the gear oil change he took it upon himself to tell me how not only was I wasting my time and good oil but that "all your gonna do is make it leak". Told me he never changes gear oil or hyro fluild either as all it will do is cause leaks or ruin your equipment. When I changed the hyro fluild in my 5030 at the specified interval, I recall having the same conversation with him. I guess this is why I keep a log of the maintenance on the back cover of the owners manual for each piece of my machinery so come resale or trade-in time, I can show that I've kept up on the required service. Makes me think that a maintenance log is something to ask for if you are going to buy a used piece of equipment.
