Rtv900 blown transmission... what now?

I bought a 2008 rtv900r6 a few days ago. Motor has 900 hours on it and runs great. Hydraulics work great for power steering and dump bed, but no movement forward or backward.

I was hoping for a misaligned shifting fork. But I was expecting bad thrust plates...what I ended up with is a mess.



Its always fun to find ball bearings rolling around in there.

So to my question. I can buy a new transmission case from messicks for $975, but I have to tear down this one, and rebuild it in a new case.

Or I can part it out and get my money back. Probably make some $$$ too, but I'd like an rtv.

For the folks it there that have done it, would you do it again?

Ouch...255 views and no one will even touch this mess online. I'm guessing it will be harder than I think, but im going to tear into it anyway.

I'll post here on my progress, even if all I do is warn others against the attempt.

Looking at the pictures it is hard to determine extent of damage but suspect both rotating groups and all related components will require replacement which will probably cost more than a replacement transmission. Another possible unknown is what preload is required on the springs in the rotating groups

Another option would be to find a “ wreck “ or one being parted out and get its transmission. Tractor House has a category called “ dismantled machines “
I have purchased parts for my equipment there.

You might do a search, it seems like someone rebuilt a transmission in a Kubota tractor. Problem is I don’t remember when it happened or which forum, maybe a few years ago.

Well, I tore it down. And I found my problem. Main thrust bearing had fallen apart.

Ordered new bearings and gaskets. I'll update you on the progress.

I got it put back together today, and everything looks like it is working great.

Some tips, take pictures and label all the cables. Plan on taking the full motor/transmission/differential out at once. Make sure you have a chain hoist...it makes it super easy. I used some scaffolding on rollers to hook up the hoist. The whole thing only weighs about 400lbs, so it was easily supported by the scaffolding.

Get yourself the workshop service guide. It is a life saver and you can find them on ebay with instant download for 10 bucks or so.




Make sure you keep everything clean and freeze your grease when you are putting it back together. You get some parts or springs that don;t want to stay put, use that cold grease and they will stay together.

Oh...if you break into that transmission, don't forget to buy your replacement gaskets with the parts you need. I was out another week because I forgot this step. And the main transmission gasket (they send you 4 of different thicknesses...I used the thickest one.) is $109...all the others are what you expect 6-10 dollars a piece.

I paid $2900 and I have about $400 in parts....and a great kubota RTV900 with only 900 hours on it.
