just got back from my Kubota dealer and he showed me the brochure for one. Nice. Now comes with AC too. And the dash looks like one out of a car. he said mid teens for a price..

The RTV will be like a lot of others, start small and get the interest up and then get bigger and bigger until like someone just said, get a Jeep.

Yep, $15K will buy a very nice Jeep to use on the farm. Actually will buy one so nice you won't want to use it on the farm!!! With AC, Cruise Control, CD player and two tops that will out pull, out haul, out run and outperform in 4wd any RTV and still drive to town for groceries and refreshments!!! :D

It's funny you said that. Last year I bought an old (well, not that old, a '01) Jeep Cherokee sport with 105k miles on it. I picked it up at an auction for $3500 plus the $100 I had to pay my friend who is a dealer and had the dealer's license to get into the auction. Anyway, after putting a set of pretty aggressive tires on it and just cleaning it up, it looks great, drives great, and is pretty amazing off road for a stocker. I've already torqued it enough to where the hood doesn't line up straight between the fenders anymore, and I dragged the muffler off twice.

But still, you're right; even though I only have about 4k in the Jeep now, I still am hesitant to take it off road everywhere because it's "too nice". Now, imagine that; I only have 4k in it and it's too nice to take off road. Hmm, I don't know what a good winch would cost, but with that, I'd take the little Jeep about anywhere my RTV will go. Better yet, I don't have to trailer the Jeep to my other property; I can just drive it there. :)

A winch worth having would cost you $600. What would get you farther would be a locker in the rear axle. For a utility beater, a Lincoln Locker is the way to go, costs a couple quarts of axle grease and a couple welding rods. Increases the ability quadruple.

But don't misunderstand me,,,, I'd love to have a new RTV1100!!! :D

But for practical purposes, I really struggle with $15K. For those wanting to purchase something 4wd and utility minded to do chores on a farm, a $4K Jeep is very hard to beat. I've got an '82 CJ with a ragtop that I bought for $1500 and it's road legal.

But I'd still love to have a new RTV1100!!!! Maybe some day.... :)

i have a 1990 toyota 4x4 pickup with automatic tranny and a/c, i paid 4500 3 years ago, it had 108000 miles on it at that time. i have since spent 3000 more for upgrades,so i have about the price of a big utility atv in it. i like it for hunting season better than an atv or utv.it is my only so called toy that i wouldn't consider selling.i really enjoy planting wildlife food plots from quarter acre to 6-7 acres, and my rtv is perfect for that job. fill the bed with bags of seed and go. i know that an rtv 1100 doesn't make financial sense but i still plan to replace my 900 with one this spring.

I totally understand!!! I'm betting that less than 10% of the purchases made by users of this website make financial sense!!! Go for it!!! I'll try to hide my jealousy when I read about your new purchase. :D

My wife likes the rtv and granted it is a nice unit. Like others have said.... a 4k cj jeep would work out just as well and have on road capabilities. I am leaning towards the jeep with a locker installed in the rear axle. We would use it mainly for the trails in our woods. The hunt begins !!!

FWIW,

I'm in the process of selling my RTV900 Camo. I just bought a 94 Toyota compact pickup 4wd in pretty good shape for $3K. I can drive down the road and just about everywhere the RTV went for about $12.5K less than I paid for the RTV.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the RTV. I am going to use the 12.5K in the construction of my 40x60 steel building. PM me if your interested in a good deal on a RTV!

I don't know what the requirements are in different states but, before I bought my RTV900, I sent an inquiry to the Massachusetts Registry to see if it was legal to have an unregistered vehicle that only would be used on my own property - it isn't. That means - at least in MA - that it would require plates, insurance, annual safety/emmission inspections and annual excise taxes so an old plow, that may be cheaper than a new RTV900, could certainely become a pain in the *** with all the possible headaches of keeping an old vehicle on the road.

Here's my correspondence - their reply is on the top:

Good day,
Yes the vehicle does need to be registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Thank you for using mass.gov/rmv,
Illuminata

I'm thinking of purchasing a used truck/plow for snow removal on my
property. If the truck is only used on my own property and never driven
on public roads does it need to be registered and insured? I assume the
person I would purchase it from would drive in to my property while
still registered to them and then remove the plates and cancel their
registration once I take posession. I'm not sure what the town I live in
would require with regards to exise tax if I don't resister it.

Thanks

Do the farmers in MA have to register their tractors? Because that is what an RTV is, its a tractor. Those things are so new that even the insurance companies don't know how to classify them.

I'm not a farmer so I'm not sure. I have seen farm equipment on the public roads but I believe they have a special farm license plate attached to them but I'm not sure if it's required - maybe only if you have to use them on public roads.

I don't have any registration for my RTV900 but I did receive a title from Kubota for it. I'm sure if I asked the RMV about the Kubota they would come up with some requirements that would involve fees.

My mistake was asking about an old pick up truck - ignorance is bliss. I'm sure people in MA have unregistered vehicles on their property but all it would take is a neighbor with a grudge and someone in authority would probably show up to rectify the situation.

The RTV1100 is basically the same size/weight as the RTV900 w/ Curtis cab...its a little bigger in the cab area due to the integrated cab frame & its components. So, it (more or less) has the same footprint as the RTV900 w/ cab. This new factory cab is a lot quieter than the RTV900 w/ cab (sound insulation everywhere) and the added power is nice.
