Thinking about switching to a full synthetic oil in my XR4040C to aid in cold weather starting.....factory service rep says use only 15W40 synthetic with CJ-4 otherwise stay with Rotella 15W40 .....any thoughts on this ? Royal purple , Amsoil ?

Don't know why you'd choose 15w40 when there's plenty of 5w40 around that's synthetic. It would provide a lot more protection to the upper valve train during startups by getting oil up there very quickly as opposed to waiting a few seconds to maybe a minute in cold weather with that 15wxx stuff.

You're just not getting the full benefits of synthetics if you use 15w40.

Rotella T6 is synthetic. It's what I use. I have a case in the garage and I believe it is 5W40. Much better for use in winter. Royal Purple and Amsoil are excellent oil choices, just out of my price range..

It is my understanding that the "w" in 15w40 stands for winter. So that equates to a 15 viscosity in the summer and a 40 viscosity in the winter. So both oils would be equal viscosity in the winter. One is a 5 viscosity when it's hot and the other a 15. Am I mistaken on this?

Mobil Delvac 1 0w-40 or Rotella T6 0w-40.

Yes.. the 'w' is the viscosity when cold, the other number is when hot. Straight 40w is like molasses when cold. and 0/5/10w-40 is still fairly thin when cold, but stays at a 40 when warm.

I have run Rotella 15W40 for years with absolutely no problems , .this new tier4 engine is harder starting than my older LS tractor ..had planned to switch to Rotella T6 at first oil change , spoke with factory service rep , he basically said 15W40 only .didn't want any warranty issues ( the manual list other oil viscosity ?), I will probably go with the T6 5W40 with Napa gold filters , really just wanted to know what other people were using, im new to this tier 4 DP filter engines ...

Actually 15W40 means it will flow like 15 weight in Winter and protect like 40 weight at operating temperature also... synthetic oils regardless of weight will flow better at colder temperature mainly due to lower wax content ......not totally correct but basically a simplified answer

If I'm investing in a 20 thousand + tractor , i don't mind spending more for the life blood of the engine....my question is which would be all around better oil for Winter and summer use , cost doesn't necessarily make it better personally I like Rotella T6 better than Amsoil , these are the only synthetic diesel oils i have used , pennzoil ultra has the best spark ( "S" ) rated oil in my opinion
