I first read TANSTAAFL in an old Robert Heinlein novel years ago.

One of Heinlein's books is where I first saw TANSTAAFL. I assume he created the acronym.

Heinlein wrote some really great SF, for those of you who are into it. "Moon" was outstanding, but my personal favorite is "Starship Troopers".
