What is the largest round hay bale you could safely lift with a 3510/112 loader? My wife wants to know and I don't have a clue! Owners please chime in!!

Thanks!

Tim,

Thanks for the link. I see the 4110 can lift round bales and I interpret the 3510/3510HST graph to lean more towards the 3510HST since it is a much smaller machine. I will not rule out the 4110.

Thanks for looking it up,

I don't think my 4110 could lift a round bale on the FEL. I probably could on the rear lift. Maybe small round bales with the FEL if I also had a bale on the rear lift. I doubt my 4110 could pickup a large bale on the FEL no matter if a bale was on the rear lift or not. Have not tried though. Most people don't get a 4110 or 3510 for hay operations. Anybody out there doing it?

my neighbor has a 55 hp full size 4wd john deere with fel and he has to use a counter weight for handleing round bails. ive heard most of the smaller tractors can handle them from the rear but i would take it slow and wear the seat belt.

It sounds like you are trying to decide what size you need based on this? Any other requirements or jobs you need the machine to do? I went with a 6500 as I will be doing square baling and possibly round baling, disc, and plow work.

Whatever you do make sure that it isn't just enough. If you are doing this often you want a safe machine that can handle it. I would start looking at the 4500 unless you are also going to be mowing the lawn and other small CUT tasks.

Maybe if you give us more info on what all you need to do we can help better?

Lit. shows lift capacity of 1972lbs for a 112 loader. I have not weighed one but I am guessing that my 4' x4' bales from a fixed chamber round baler go about 600-700 lbs. This is dry hay. Haylage would be much heavier. Two haylage bales on the front of my 6500 make you know that something is there.

The dealer I spoke to when trying out a 4110 said he had a number of customers who purchased the 4110 to use almost exclusively to feed round bales to their cattle.

The key to handling round bales would be to use loaded tires. Most of the time two bales are moved at once, one on the rear and one on the front.

BOB, The 3510 gear transmission tractor and the 4110 tractor use the same chassis & loader, so the lifting capacity is the same. The 4110 uses a wider front tire which improves your floatation with the heavy loader loads. I have customers who use 4110 tractors to lift 600 to 700# bales, on a steady basis. I even have a customer who uses a 2615 tractor to lift the bales into the feeder. Of coarse it wouldn't lift it to full height but it will get it up 3' to get it into the feeder. The 3510 would do fine with the light to medium weight bales. Definately load the rear tires.

Thanks for all the replies! I will be moving round bales only in the winter and the rest of the time mowing, landscaping, etc. Loaded tires and other weights in back of course! I would need to lift them off a trailer, put them in to storage, and then move them into the pastures one at a time, low and slow.
If I use a 3pt hitch spike, can a 2810 gear move them?

With a 3 point spike you should not have a problem moving them, except reaching onto a trailer. It would have to be a pretty low trailer. I have moved 4' x 4' silage bales with a spike on the back of a little 430 JD and a Case VA. These are 1950 's tractors 13-15 hp. I even built a ramp so I could put them on a wrapper with 3 point. Yes the neighbors laugh at me sometimes, but you do with what you have.

I would buy the biggest tractor I could on my budget. I have a 50hp 5005 and we put up 6x6 bales at nearly 1800 lbs. The 5005 is at the edge of its envelope on these. My brother-in-law puts up a 4x6 bale at about 1000 lbs and the 5005 tosses them around. I can even use the FEL w/o a ballast bale on the back (I do have loaded tires). With Dad's bales I have to pick the 3pt bale up first and put the FEL bale down first. Figure the tractor you NEED then get the next size up. Think about it... If you work the thing at its max how long will it last as compared to a larger tractor working more towards the middle of its envelope?

thats some good advice, i needed something like a c35, i got a 4500, now im glad i did. this texas clay is a heavy duty job for a front end loader, even with the 4500 i might need to water my tires, not to carry the dirt but to dig into it.

Thank you everyone for the great insights. My wife has informed me there will be no tractor until the house is built and we haven't even poured the slab yet. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif AAGGHH! I guess I'll re-engage in 6-8 months. Time to go sailing in the mean time!!

Thanks!

You need to tell her this is the best time to get a tractor! You'll have a lot of mess around and mud and cleanup. Also a tractor with a beefy fel is the ticket for moving constuction materials (pallets of lumber, plywood, etc).

Are you a doit yerselfer or is someone else doing it?
