I recently purchased a used Simplicity model 1600199, 48" rototiller. This tiller was designed for a 2000 rpm PTO. The fellow I bought it from has changed a drive sprocket and ran it on his BX, but said the 540 rpm never gave him good tine speed, listed as 200 rpm. In his Craiglist ad, he stated he felt ~1000 rpm would be an effective pto speed. As I have a B2320 and the two speed pto, I contacted the fellow and decided to look a the tiller and the rest is history. (And yes, the 960 rpm seems to run the tiller well.)
This long winding road brings me to the point of my post. The prior owner has also added 5" to the pto shaft in order to use it on his BX. My B has larger geometry and although the shaft is "effectively" long enough, I feel it would be safer and have more stability with another 3" of shaft length. The shaft is 15/16" square stock with a halve round grove milled on one flat to keep the joints in proper orientation. I contacted the previous owner again and he stated as he recalls he had to have a piece milled to match. My other option would be purchase a longer shaft, however the tiller end has a 1" round shaft with 1/4" key, not the 1 3/8" six spline and my attempts to locate an adapter have been futile. Any suggestions from the large knowledge pool available here on Tractorbynet?
Thanks for reading and responding if you can!
BTW If I decide adding more length to the shaft is the way to go, I will have a piece milled long enough to cut off the old extension and add the new.
