I switched over to the the Rotella Synthetic I could not miss the fact that there is a distict smell difference. In fact I smelled the blue, 1 gal. empty bottle and it sure smells different than the non-synthetic motor oil that I am used to. Please let me know if 1) the smell is normal 2) that you can or can not smell a difference in muffler exhaust smell 3) whether or not you have smelled it gassing from the breather

It's probably normal but even my son noticed the difference in smell after the oil change.

Update - I am confident that all oil is cleaned from everything after the change. I still smell the Rotella Synthetic smell. Gents - I just don't know because I have not used it.

It's the calcium compounds and other 20% of the mix they use in the base oil that's what they indicated it does smell different. It will probaly smell in exhaust and raw crank emissions at least rotella t 15w-40 does. As i've said in other post rotella T stinks /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

1200 Delo stinks too. Especially when it gets on a hot exhaust manifold.

Shady,

I'm going to check out your other posts on Rotella.

Thanks for the quick note. I think it is stinking out of the exhaust and the crank case breather and on my hands and on my gloves and on the garage floor and on the funnel and the empty jug is still "gassing". Pee Uuuu. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually - it's not that bad - just different smelling.

I seached for Rotella Synthetic oder, stink, smell and this site came up with this Q and A.

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/oil_change.htm

Q: After an oil change, I get a horible, heavy oil smell. What is the problem?

From TSB 09-02-00: The odor condition is the result of certain diesel engine oil additives. These oil additives are blended with the base oil during the manufacture of the engine oil. Some diesel engine oils with the American Petroleum Institute quality rating of CH-4 or CH-4+ may be more prone to exhibiting the odor condition. The odor appears to reduce in intensity as the engine oil ages, usually after the first 300 to 500 miles following the oil change.

Guess the stink is noticed by others but wears off. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Synthetic oils have a different smell from conventional oils, especially noticeable if you spill some onto a hot engine. Unless there is something putriferous (I just made that word up) about the smell or each can (of the same oil) smells different I think we can assume it is normal. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hey, you experiment and then let me know how it comes out, I got all the guys at work running Shellatilla--excuse me Rottella in their bikes and such, my jugs of the stuff are sitting on my roll away awaiting their and your results /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. J

Please describe the odour of Rotella. Also, is the additive package common to all Shell products with the 'Rotella' moniker?

I'm assuming that ester-based synthetics have a fruity odour...

What really matters is the taste. Rotella syn. should have a slightly sweet taste. The regular Rotella has a bit of garlic twang to it. I just put a drop on my finger and touch it to the tip of my toung.;)

As we all know the Rotella 5w-40 isn't really a synthetic anyway, in the old manner anyway.
I seem to recall a problem with the Rotella 5w-40 a few years back where it really smelled bad and there was a "recall" on it. I know I returned a bunch I had bought.
All that said I use it now and don't notice any more stink than other oils..my truck has a road draft tube* so I definitely smell whatever is in it when idling. The smell does get less after a thousand miles or so...I also run Delvac and Delo 15w-40 in warmer months, until I use up my stock.
There is a new version of the Rotella 5w-40, T6 I think it is, haven't bought it yet, so no sniff test..

*went to the direct road draft vent after I kept blowing aftercooler hoses off under high boost due to oil film in the intake from feeding the oil vapors into it to be burned.

Then what is it? If its just mineral oil, why would you pay the extra for it?
